Hield, Stewart win Wooden Award
LOS ANGELES — Buddy Hield of Oklahoma and
Breanna Stewart of Connecticut won the John R.
Wooden Award as national players of the year Friday.
Hield also claimed the Jerry West shooting guard
of the year award, having led Division I with 147 3-
pointers made. He finished second in the nation in
scoring, averaging 25.0 points, while taking his team
to the Final Four in his senior year.
Stewart capped her college career with her second
straight Wooden Award, to go with her four most out-
standing player trophies from the Final Four.
“It’s been fun and I can’t be more blessed to be
around college basketball,” Hield said.
Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith received the
Wooden Legends of Coaching award. Georges Niang
of Iowa State was named Karl Malone Power For-
ward of the Year.

NCAA slams Tyndall over violations
JACKSON, Miss. — Donnie Tyndall’s career
slammed into a brick wall Friday after the NCAA hit the
former Southern Mississippi men’s coach with a 10-year
show-cause order for orchestrating a breathtaking case
of academic fraud designed to land recruits and other
misconduct that included trying to cover up payments
to athletes and potential evidence in the case.
The school’s self-imposed two-year postseason
ban was accepted by the NCAA, but the program is
under probation until 2020 and will lose four more
scholarships over the next three years.
The 47-page NCAA report said Tyndall was on the
job for just six weeks when he started skirting the
rules in order to land prospects.
He “directed members of his staff to complete
fraudulent coursework for seven prospects so they
could be immediately eligible to compete,” the NCAA
said. Three staff members were told to “travel to two-
year colleges” to complete the coursework.
Tyndall left in 2014 for Tennessee, where he was
fired after one season after his involvement in the
Southern Miss violations came to fight.
The order — which essentially makes the 45-year-
old unemployable at the NCAA level — runs through
April 7,2026. Even if he is employed after that date, he
must sit out 50 percent of his team’s first full season.

FRIDAY’S RESULT
The Mavericks, who had al-
ready slowed their pace consid-
erably because of injuries, had to
reconfigure their offense again
when Barea left with a right
groin strain in the first half.
Dallas got contributions
from several unlikely sources,
including a career-high 19
points from rookie Justin An-
derson, while matching a season
best with a sixth straight win.
The Mavericks will make the
postseason for the 15th time in 16
seasons with a win or Houston
loss in the final three games.
Tony Allen scored 25 points
to lead the injury-riddled Griz-
zlies, who lost for the seventh
time in eight games a night after
clinching a playoff spot when the
Rockets lost at home to Phoenix.
Memphis (42-37) dropped a
half-game behind Portland for
the fifth seed, and the Mavericks
(41-38) still have a chance to get
that high because they hold the
tiebreakers with both teams.
The Grizzlies play Golden State
twice in their final three games
and are at the Los Angeles Clip-
pers in the other.
Barea, the team’s leading
scorer for the first five wins in
the streak after the offensive
pace changed, was injured mid-
way through the first quarter
when he was fouled on a drive by
Jordan Farmar. He returned in
the second quarter, but was
slowed significantly and went to
the locker room for good about 3
minutes after coming back in.
The diminutive veteran has
been starting in place of Deron
Williams, who missed his eighth
straight game with a left abdom-
inal strain. Versatile forward
Chandler Parsons is out for the
season after right knee surgery.
Harris was the start of the so-
lution in the second half, when
he scored all 16 of his points. He
had 12 straight for Dallas across
the third and fourth quarters be-
fore Felton, who had a season-
high 14 assists and scored 11
points, found Anderson on a
right-wing 3 for the first double-
digit lead for either team at 81-71
with 10 minutes remaining.
Anderson hit another 3 with
the shot clock about to expire
before another rookie, 7-foot-2
Tunisian center Salah Mejri,
scored six straight points to fin-
ish a 28-8 run going back to
third quarter for a 90-73 Dallas
lead.

OU’s Owen Field surrounded by bowl
NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma fans and recruits
will get much more than a typical spring game experi-
ence Saturday. The stadium that opened in 1923 has
been turned into a bowl.
The update was provided Friday during a “topping
out” ceremony. Athletic director Joe Castiglione and
coach Bob Stoops spoke with the newly enclosed south
end as the backdrop. The frame of the bowl is in place. A
tree was placed on a beam on top of what will be the
scoreboard to symbolize the completion of the frame.
New loge boxes and concession areas will be fin-
ished by the start of the 2016 season.

Marquez fastest again in Austin
AUSTIN — Marc Marquez has been complaining
about poor acceleration on his Repsol Honda. He is
making up for it with a slightly new approach to how
he navigates Circuit of the Americas, the track where
he has won three years in a row.
Marquez turned in the fastest laps in both practice
sessions Friday at the Grand Prix of the Americas,
shaking off a spill in the afternoon that left him walk-
ing his motorcycle back to the garage.
Although frustrated by what he calls a lack of top
acceleration this year, Marquez said he is adjusting by
taking his turns wider.

Story first to homer in first four games
DENVER — Trevor Story became the first major
leaguer to homer in each of his first four games, con-
necting two more times for Colorado in a 13-6 loss to
San Diego on Friday.
Story has six home runs since making his debut on
opening day with two shots off Zack Greinke. Nobody
before him had ever posted two multihomer games in
his first four games, the Elias Sports Bureau said.
Matt Kemp and Melvin Upton Jr. homered as the
Padres broke loose after they were the first team in
history to be shut out in its first three games.

Devils’ Hynes to coach U.S. at worlds
New Jersey
Devils coach John Hynes has been named the coach
of the United States team that will compete at the In-
ternational Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World
Championship in Russia next month.
USA Hockey announced the appointment Friday,
two days before the end of the NHL regular season.
The tournament will be held May 6-22 in Moscow
and St. Petersburg.
He previously was named an assistant coach for the
U.S. team that will compete in the 2016 World Cup of
Hockey. Hynes is finishing his first season as an NHL
head coach. He spent the previous six seasons with the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL.

Memphis made it interesting
in the final minutes, getting
within five before Nowitzki
