Book Love Foundation re-
cently awarded Melinda Bu-
chanan a $500 grant to pur-
chase novels for her classroom.
The Krum High School Eng-
lish teacher applied for the grant
over the summer by writing an
essay about how to motivate her
students to read. Her first ship-
ment of books arrived last
month.
Registration open for
fishing tournament
The Denton ISD Future
Farmers of America club will
host its first fishing tournament
Saturday at two area lakes.
The entry fee is $40 for each
team of two, and prizes include
Visa gift cards, fishing poles and
bicycles. Competitors who are
registered can make their first
cast at 7 a.m. and must make it
back to each designated site by
2:30 p.m. for weigh-in.
The awards ceremony will
begin at 4 p.m. at C.H. Collins
Athletic Complex, with food
provided by Sonic Drive-In.
Registration is open and can
be completed by visiting http://
bit.ly/2dVtmlp. Participants al-
so can register from 7 to 8 a.m.
Saturday at Camp Copass on
Lewisville Lake or Isle Du Bois
park on Ray Roberts Lake.

Alumni invited to
perform with jazz bands
Alumni of the Denton High
School jazz band program are
invited to play with honorees
and current students at the
Homecoming Jazz Concert on
Thursday.
The concert, which cele-
brates the 50th anniversary of
the school’s jazz program, is at
7:30 p.m. in the Denton High
auditorium.
Honored guests include
Denton High alumnus and U.S.
Ambassador Warren Tichenor
and jazz drummer Donny Os-
borne, who will help the current
Denton High lab bands perform
a tribute to jazz legend Buddy
Rich.

livestock show at the State Fair
of Texas earlier this month.

Guyer High School football
players and their mothers came
together to kick off the school’s
homecoming week with a “Foot-
ball 101” event.
Guyer head coach John
Walsh, with the assistance of
some of his players, helped ex-
plain rules, formations and ref-
eree calls to mothers who often
ask questions at football games.
Strength and conditioning
coach Kyle Keese spoke about
health and nutrition, while Ve-
rone McKinely, a football scout,
gave tips on academic and ath-
letic recruiting in college.

Teens as part of the schoolwide
Guyer Reads initiative.
