Corpus Christi
Abbott attends first
event since hospital stay
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott
made his first public appearance
since being hospitalized last
month with severe bums.
Abbott attended the ground-
breaking Monday afternoon of a
nearly $900 million new harbor
bridge in Corpus Christi. The
project will eventually replace
the aging hat-shaped bridge
that’s a signature landmark of
the coastal city.
Abbott didn’t refer to the ex-
tensive second- and third-de-
gree burns he incurred on his
lower legs and feet after being
scalded July 7 while vacationing
in Wyoming. His office won’t say
exactly how he was burned.
Abbott missed the Republi-
can National Convention and
underwent treatment at San
Antonio’s Brooke Army Medical
Center.
He was scalded the same day
a sniper killed hve Dallas pohce
officers. Abbott held a news con-
ference the next day but didn’t
disclose at the time he was in-
jured.
George Thomas Kohoutek
was hit by a car on July 20 while
jogging in the Pleasant Grove
district of southeastern Dallas.
Kohoutek, who was 64, died a
week later after his estranged
brother decided to have him re-
moved from hfe support. An-
drew Lee Laymond, who’s 68,
was arrested July 21 and charged
with accident involving serious
bodily injury. He’s free on
$3,500 bond. Court records hst
no attorney for Laymond, who
doesn’t have a working tele-
phone number hsted.
The Dallas Morning News
reports Kohoutek served two
years of a 20-year prison sen-
tence after pleading guilty to
manslaughter for Rafael Cara-
cheo’s 1990 hit-and-run death.

for all you have done in your
service to others! You have

The Electric Reliability
Council of Texas, which operates
that grid that covers most of the
state, says demand peaked at
70,169 megawatts between 4
p.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday.
That shatters the previous re-
cord of 69,877 megawatts set
last Aug. 10.
One megawatt is about
enough electricity to power
about 200 homes.
