Mr. Gene Hammond. Joe suggested that I ask an older man who was
passing by. When asked, he first said he did not know Mrs Burlingame,
then said said tOh, that is Mary Lois Haywood, but I don't
know where she is.t
?Wednesday a few of the booths a-nd rides were operating,
no fence around the carnival , no gates in operation.
Thursday evening when I went to the carnival grc .nds, I
located I.rs. B3urlingame, now mrs. Haywood. Shle was sitting in a
front office of a truck on the carnival ,grounds with a lady she
introduced as Iirs. Harmond who wfas apparently directing the
operation of concessions and rides. The truck prominently
displayed the words GENE HAVIPMOND SHOWS,. small booth was set up
near a ,children s :merry-go-round; lrs. Haywood's daughter was in
charge and selling tickets.
Mrs THaywood informed me she had been out of town Tuesday
and Wednesday buying two trucks, that two had broken down on the
trio to Therman . The al sa e d t t c d 150 miles.
When asked where located she said she was registered at
Cross loads Motel in the name of :Mary Haywood.
The afternoon before a complaint had been registered with
the City Managers Office that one of the rides was in bad order
and that one of the operators had been operating it while drink.
I .:as asked who was in charge of the carnival. I didn't know.
All I could tell was as far as the . Old settlers Association was
concerned the City was free to make a full investigation.
Thursday morning I called I;r. Jim /rndrews at th;e City Ma nagers
Office. THe reported that evidertly the report was exaggerated,
that the City had made an inspection of the carnival equipment
and all seemed to be in good condition arnd the report of drunkenness
seemed to have no foundation.
Thursday evening everything see.red to be in place and
operating a fair crowd was coming through the gates.
Until Friday the weather for the week had been ideal.
Friday evening threatening clouds and soicn rain kept all but a
small number away.
Saturday evening attendance was very good.
1Ir. Brooks reports the funds received by the Association
were slightly less than one-half the amount received from the
197, carnival.
This was a disappointment, especially so, since the weather
was near ideal except for Friday evening.
oot once while here did lMrs. H}aywood mention any connection
with 3ene Hammond Shows.
There, you have the story.
Personally I admire iMrs. Haywood and like the way she
complied with the contract we had with hter for 1978, but now I
wonder about her managerial ability and other things you can
deter ine from reading this letter.
irs. Haywcod said she had recently talked with you alnd
thought because of lonr trips and high cost of transportation
you had abandoned the idea of taking your shows north.
If this be true , would you consider bringing the BUILL
HAMIcE~S
hHO" '"' BiCGK TO SHEil ;?
In the words of Poiice Cantain Pickrmns, "If Buster will
return he'll have it made." The same sentiment expressed differently
I heard on the carnival grounds this August,
