Fannindel Elementary School Studies
Hispanic Heritage
Bereaved Parent Support
Group to Meet
Mrs. Stegall’s 3rd grade spent
2 weeks studying the Hispanic
Heritage Month. During their
study, they learned important facts
about Mexico. They also studied
about the Mayans and Aztec
Indians that ruled Mexico more
than 1,000 years ago, as well as the
Spanish costumes and foods. The
students did a lot of activities using
Fannindel Elementary School
had a Halloween costume contest
October 29, 1999. The judges for
the contest were Cecil Jones, Mike
Smith, Eva Feaglcy, Sherry Cheney
and Heidi Hollowed. The judges
had a difficult time because all of
the contestants were very creative
and spooky. The winners were:
Pre K.3 - 1" place, Candice
Davis. Runners up, Haley
Davidson and Steven Lock.
Prc-K4 - 1” place, Chatorian
Lock. Runners up, Denton
Winchester and Kristina Dunigan.
1*' grade - 1“ place, Savannah
Pulliam. Runners up, Cherokee
Moreland and Jeffery Hinkle.
The Enloe Hobby Club of Enloc
met at the home of Dave and Patsy
(Moore) Oyler in Cooper for its
regular monthly meeting on
Wednesday, October 20, 1999.
The business meeting was called
to order by the club president, Sam
Lester. Several items of interest
and upcoming events and projects
were discussed and approval.
Bonnie (Toon) Johnston made
a special announcement that Joe
(Cotton-Eye) Walker of Waco
would be m Enloe on Monday and
Tuesday, November 1-2, to com-
plete his video work on the com-
munity. Marlene Walker, his wile,
and Carl Johnston of Campbell
will be assisting him.
Members enjoyed a tour of the
lovely home and refreshments of
delicious carrot cake by Kathy's
Kitchen, punch and coffee served
by the hostess and assisted by her
sister, Anna Jo Johnson of Parts.
The following members were
present: Mary (Davis) House;
Bonnie Johnston; Virginia
McDowell; Christene Carrington;
Avis (Brannon) Whitlock; Clarice
Maddox; Shirley Walker; Joyce
the Spanish vocabulary.
They participated in Hispanic
Hopscotch and Spanish Bingo. At
last, they completed the study with a
huge Fiesta.
The students wore Spanish attire
and brought a variety of Mexican
foods to eat as they listened to Spanish
music and learned the Mexican Hat
Dance.

Runners up, Taylor McKinney and
Blake Reed.
6th grade -1“ place, Sabrina Barker.
Runners up, Travis Burnett and
Amber Grant.
Staff - 1" place, Mrs. Stegall.
Runners up, Mrs. Bartlett and Mrs.
Grant.
Taylor; Susie Sampson; Anna Jo
Johnson; Sam Lester; Pam
McFarland; Patsy Oyler; and one new
member, Mrs. Bert (Patsy) Byrd of
Enloe.
The next regular meeting will be
held on Wednesday, November 17
with Joyce Taylor as hostess.
Ten locally known students were
among the more than 300 high
school seniors who participated in
the fifteenth annual All-Senior
Honor Band Saturday, January 10,
on the East Texas State University
Campus in Commerce.
From Cooper were LaNell Oats,
Judy Kay Allen, Barbara Barrow,
Patricia Dennis, Evelyn Janes, Gail
Lowery, Nelda Ramey, Martha Jane
Shaffer and Rosanna Hendrix.
Also participating in the concert
along with the Cooper students and
seniors from four states, Texas,
Oklahoma, Arkansas and
Louisiana, was Judy Spring of
Seymour, granddaughter of Mr. and
Mrs. J.D. Dunn of Cooper.
Private Isaac Hamson, 19, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Harrison of Ben
Franklin graduatal recently from
the Chaparral/Vulcan Crewman
Course at the U.S. Army Training
Center, Fort Bliss, Texas.
Chief Master Sergeant John M.
Elkins, son of John M. Elkins of
commerce, is a member of a unit
that has earned the U.S. Air Force
Outstanding Unit Award.
Sergeant Elkins, sergeant major
in the 4780,h Air Defense Wing at
Perrin AFB, TX, will wear the
distinctive service ribbon to mark
his affiliation with the wing.
Mrs. John Houston entertained
members and guest of the Sewing
Club Thursday afternoon in her
home.

School Student of the month
awards for December were Judy
MeQuagge and Frank Miller, both
seniors.
Help in the effort to obtain
release of impounded federal funds
appropriated for Cooper Reservoir
was pledged by Senator John Tower
at a meeting with area
representatives January 8 in Dallas.
Tower assured the group he was
highly interested in the big South
Sulphur River project and would do
what he could to expedite its
construction.
At stake is the release of
S1,080,000 appropriated by law for
Cooper Reservoir but later placed

The speaker for the November 8
meeting will be Louise Stuart. The
topic will be "Strategies for Coping
with the Holidays.”
Louise is a schoolteacher in her
3 3rd year of teaching. She received
her BA degree from Stephen F.
Austin State Teachers College; took
graduate hours from Northwestern
State in Louisiana; and at age fifty-
eight, began a different route in her
teaching career by attending East
Texas State for two years to receive
certification in Special Education.
She worked in that department at
Aaron Parker Elementary for
eleven years. She is now in her
tlurd year as Homebound Teacher
for Lamar County Special
Education Co-Op; serving students
in the North Lamar, Chisuin,
Prairieland, and Roxton
Independent School Districts.
Jim and Trisha Blundell made a
trip to Tom Bean on Sunday to meet
their daughter and family, Rebecca
and Jerry Anderson and daughter,
Sarah for a short visit. Trisha also
visited via telephone with their son
and family, Ricky and Christine
Blundell and boys on Sunday.
Visitors in the home of Phillip
and Allie Stone were Roger and
Lynn Stone of Paris, Estil Hoskison
of Ladonia, Wanda Goets, Sissy and
Ashley of Yowell, and Glen Stone
of Cooper.

John Kerbin and Family of Horton.
Phillip and Mike Stone visited
Marion and Marz.ee White. Mike
Stone, Diane Robinson and Cheryl
went to Paris on Fnday night for a
Halloween Party.
Allie and Mike visited Boyd
Hoskison and Eldon Brookshire.
Allie also visited Verna Mitchell,
Faye Huff and Margie Elmer.
Visitors in the home of Gairge
and Pearl Foster were Vada Foster
and Theresa, and Chris Carroll,
Gene and Cindy Foster, Jennifer
and Daniel. George also visited.
Mabel Wheat made a trip to
Chapel Hill to visit Herschell and
Lousie and her husband, Russell
live in Reno. They are charter
members of the Bereaved Parents
Support Group. Their oldest son,
Miehael, was killed in a fall
November 12, 1987. They have one
surviving son, Todd, who lives in
Jaekson, Mississippi; a foster son,
Teny Cox of Shreveport, Louisiana;
and one grandson, Jeremy, Michael’s
son.

best teacher, Louise has had eleven
years of experience in developing
coping skills to survive the holidays
and she will share some of those with
us.

experiences in an effort to help others,
at the TU Electne Building located at
6.35 Clarksville Street, Paris. The
meeting will start at 7 p.m.

and Jeffrey and Michelle. All of the
family went to First Monday Trade
Days in Canton. Mabel said they
spent a lot of time under awning or in
little buildings to stay out of the liquid
sunshine. They enjoyed themselves
despite the rain.
Visitors of Faye Berry were Glovon
Collard, Cody ami Lauren West and
Knn Phipps and Hillary and Colton.
Neff McBride underwent eye
surgery on Tuesday, November 2.
Hope everything goes okay, Neff. You
will be in all our prayers.
Cecile and Georgie Mae Farrell of
Mesquite visited and had dinner with
Georgie’s mother, Oleta Hooten on
Thursday of last week. Other visitors
of Oleta were Mary Wicks and Travis
Gairge.
Dustin Flowers spent the weekend
with grandparents, Ray and Mary
Wieks. Ray and Mary took Dustin
trick-or-treating in Sulphur Springs
on Saturday night. Then they all ate
pizza out.
Happy Birthday to Calvin Spencer
and Chaz. Ballard on November 5.
