Chamber Banquet A Success
Though there were technical
difficulties and the evening ran
somewhat longer than is the norm,
there were plenty of surprises and
special moments during the Delta
County Chamber of Commerce
banquet which is the highlight of the
Chamber’s year. The banquet is the
time the Chamber recognizes
outstanding contributions to Delta
County and to the Chamber. It is also
the time when members have the
opportunity to elect new Directors.
The Board of Directors recommended
a slate for the six expiring positions,
and all six were unanimously elected
by the members. District Judge Robert
Newsom installed five returning
Directors, Don Abernathy, David
Abernathy, Larry Vandiver, Kathy
Erwin and Ann Miller and one first-
time Director J.C. Vaughn whose
three-year teams began with the
installation.
The new Cooper Junior/Senior
High School was elegantly decorated
by Main Street Floral Company owned
by Gaylon Maddox. He donated his
time and several members of his staff
and furnished all the decorations. The
theme of the banquet “Our Future is a
Reflection of our Past” was carried out
with mirrored tile and topiary trees
topped with mirrored balls interwoven
with greenery. There were pillars
supporting a balloon arch over the
head-table.
One of the highlights of the
evening was the presentation of
“Lifetime Citizen Award” to Joe
Choate for his years of service to
Cooper as Postmaster, to his church,
and to organizations such as the
Cooper Lions Club where he has
served many, many hours behind the
scenes doing those necessary but
thankless tasks that keep things
running smoothly. Mr. Choate was
introduced by Chamber Director
Don Abernathy, and no one could
doubt he was a crowd favorite as the
crowd stood and applauded as he
made his way to the stage.
Awards for Volunteer of the year
were given to Cindy Jarrell and
Hugh Whitney. Executive Director
Virginia Whitney presented Mrs.
Jarrell he award, and Master of
Ceremonies and Chamber Director
Larry Vandiver presented Mr.
Whitney his award. Agriculturist
of the Year was presented to Paul
Burt by Chamber Vice President
Donnie Peters. Director Foy Bums
made the presentations for Small
Business of the Year to two winners,
Vaughn’s Antiques and
Experienced Furniture owned by
Barbara and J.C. Vaughn and Ruth’s
Main Street Specialties owned by
Bill and Ruth Crow. President Gary
McCain presented Cooper ISD
Superintendent Fred Wilkerson an
award for Lifetime Achievement in
Education.
Speaker Mike Bartley did an
outstanding job sharing humorous
tidbits about life in Delta County before
his service years and after. He said
that we in Delta County can be proud
of her heritage and our home. Attitude
is the key as he shared examples of
the difference in perspective as viewed
through either a positive or a negative
attitude.
Vickie Hoskison gave a wrenching
rendition of “Love in Any Language”
that touched the emotions of the one
hundred ninety-five people present.
Her clear beautiful voice filled the
cafeto~:um with “love and beauty”.
Jay Albright, Chiggerfest
Chairperson, presented framed
certificates to Silver Sponsors of
Chiggerfest and to individuals who
handled major events at the Fest. In
addition, others who made outstanding
contributions to the success of the
event were recognized.
Special guests attending included
Representative L.P. (Pete) Patterson
and his wife Doris. Representing area
Chambers were George Struve, CEO
of the Lamar County Chamber of
Commerce and his wife Bonita, and
June Dunn, Manager of the Commerce
Chamber of Commerce.
Accompanying Mrs Dunn was Doctor
Trezzie Presley and his wife Peggy.
Representing Hopkins County
Chamber of Commerce was Special
Events Chairman Jim Melton and his
wife Debra.
