Perhaps one of the earliest at-
tempts at pricing was made by
Charles J. Phillips in his, "The
Stamps of Mexico; 1856-1872," pub-
lished in 1917. The prices are based
on the quantities of the various dis-
tricts which has passed through the
hands of his firm, Stanley Gibbons,
Ltd., of London. While by no means
complete nor entirely valid, his list
provides a convenient yardstick even
today to those who are fortunate
enough to possess a copy of this book.
The various catalogues issued by
the firm of Eduardo Aguirre of Mex-
ico City, have shown prices for the
majority of these stamps, and al-
though by no means rigid nor in-
fallible, the prices as given in the
1937 edition will give a good approxi-
mation. This will perhaps be the
easiest work for the average collector
to obtain.
In 1935, the Marquis de Fayolle
in collaboration with Paul de Smeth
published "Les Premieres Emisions
du Mexique, 1856-1874," a rather ex-
haustive and very valuable work. In
this book a proportionate value based
on the number of stamps of each de-
nomination issued to each district was
given to each stamp. No actual value
was represented, but a "coefficient of
rarity" was assigned to each stamp.
The following year the Masguis pub-
lished a "Catalogue Detaille du
Mexique, 1856-1874," a companion
volume to the first, in which these
"coefficients" were translated into
francs at the rate of 15 francs to the
dollar. Some of the prices as reached
