DEATH OF O. JANNASCH
Through Mr. Heusinger we received
the sad news of the tragic death of our
friend and member Oscar Jannasch, who
died at Robert B. Green Memorial Hospi-
tal Sunday night June 8, from wounds in-
flicted in an attempt hold up at the hands
of a negro bandit. This hold-up occurred
Friday night while Mr. Jannasch was
going home from work at the Appman
& Seger Drug Store, Grant Avenue and
Austin Street. He was held up on North
Alamo near Casa Blanca Street, San
Antonio. Instead of complying with the
order to throw up his hands, IMr. Jft-
nasch attempted to shove the bandit's gun
aside. The negro fired :twice, the first
shot missing Mr. Jannasch but the second
entered his body through the abdomen
and passed through his body to come out
the left side of his back. He was operat-
ed on Saturday morning and died Sunday
night.
The negro escaped but arrests have
been made and it is hoped by the Scribe
that the right man has been found.
Thus Texas Philately loses another
member, a most ardent collector, a man
of wonderful character and a very dear
friend to us all.We can only add that the bereaved
family can be sure of our heartfelt simpa-
thy in their bereavement and that we will
all feel the loss of our good friend. May
he rest in peace.
DEATH OF GUSTAVE C. CUENOD
On September 22, 1930 philately lost
one of its oldest members, a stanch de-
votee of the hobby, Mr. Gustave C.
Cuenod, who had attained the grand old
age of 80 years, 11 months and 13 days.
Mr. Cuenod was born in Vevey, Corsier,
Switzerland, October 9, 1849. He was a
former member of the Swiss Parliament
and a vetran of the Franco-Prussian War.
He came to !the United States in 1891,
moving to Galveston in 1896, where he
resided until death. He was in the busi-
ness of insurance and real estate, until
about six years ago when he retired
from active business. Mr. Cuenod was
for years Secretary of the local French
Society.
Mr. Cuenod's activities in philately
dated back to 1865 and they were many.
He was Secretary for the Texas Phila-
telic Society for many years, also held
the office of Vice-President, Trustee, Di-
rector, etc. He was for many years In-
ternational Secretary of the American
Philatelic Society, also International Sec-
retary of the Southern Philatelic Society,
and until just a year or two ago was
International Secretary of the Society of
Philatelic Americans. He held member-
ship card No. 2 in the T. P. A.; and No.
1266 in the A. P. S.
His col tion is exceptionally strong
in stamps of his old country-- witzer-
land. He collected stamps of all coun-
tries and many fine stamps are found in
his collection. No collector ever derived
more genuine pleasure from stamps than
did Mr. Cuenod, especially during his last
eight or ten years. His collection formed
practically all of Mr. Cuenod's work and
knowing him intimately I know it was a
great pleasure to -him.
Mr. Cuenod is survived by his wife,
six sons, six daughters and many grand-
children and great grandchildren.
Stampitis offers its sincere sympathy
l ie family in their bereavement.
