Desdemona, in southeast Eastland County, Texas, was a quiet town until oil was discovered on Joe Duke's land September 2, 1918 at which time the town became a boom town. Dotted with oil rigs, Desdemona was the scene of much lawlessness until the Texas Rangers restored order in April, 1920. "Hogtown" was its nickname because of the crowded conditions.
