Believed Inheritance
Tax Will be Retained
By International News Service.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 22. -Despite
pressure from the W*fiite House, treas
ury. commercial interests and a score
of states, it seemed unlikely today
that'the Congressional framers of
the new revenue act will remove the
federal inheritance tax. The tax may
be lower but Representative Garnei
of Texas and Green of Iowa were poai
tive that the tax will be retained.
By International News Service.
WASHINGTON D. C., Oct. 22 —
A new water development fight in-
volving a potential billion dollar
project on the Collado river, and
far transcending the Muscle Shoals
row, appeared on the horizon of the
new Congress today when private
interests made application for a fed-
eral license to build a dam in the
Grand Canyon.
The Senate Irrigation Committee
lias started west to conduct hearings
on the proposal, it was announced
this morning. Opposition to the
proposition is said to have reached
fever heat in Arizona. Wyoming,
Utah, California. New Mexico, and
opposing the proposed tremendous
Nevada. Interests in these states
project are expected to have strong
representations at the committee
hearings and one of the bitterest
fights in the history of the country
is expected to result. V
The application for license to
build the dam was filed by James B.
Giran.. who declares that he staked
a damsite on Diamond Creek. Colo.,
ten years ago.
