Long ago the railroad* made possible the
swift settlement and development of this
lead.
Today they face their greatest test ia the
straggle to preserve it.
For this is essentially a war of rolling
wheels. Millions of men, and tens of mil-
lions of tons of vital raw and finished prod-
ucts mast be moved swiftly and sorely,
where and Vhen they are needed.
Stop tbt mbooh that motto thorn, ami we
stop ail thatfloats ami flies at wolL
That is why today, on the Santa Fa, move-
ments essential to the war effort are "top-
ping” the biggest job In oar history. They
toast come first, beyond argument or self-
ish interest, on every American railroad.

* Those sturdy Pilgrim Fathers of 1621, who first
set aside a day for giving thanks, have given us
an ideal and a spirit which we must preserve.
As we remember the hardships and the dangers
which they faced, may we find pew inspiration
and determination to win freedom, justice slid'
peace, so that all the world may give thanks.

Eastland Mayor
Resigns; Falsely
Rumored a Spy
C. H. Hoffman has tendered his
resignation as mayor of Eastland
because, he said Tuesday, of false
rumors that he was a German spy.
Last Thursday he submitted his
resignation along with a statement
saying:
“I find it unfair to the citizens of
Eastland to serve them aa their
Mayor or as City Commissioner, as
it is generally and very publicly
known that during my absence
from the city last week the report
was widely and thoroughly circu-
lated that I am a German spy and
that the FBI discovered a short-
wave radio set at my home, and
that I was arrested by the govern-
ment agencies for same.”
Hoffman, whose mother and fa-
ther came to this country from
Germany, cited "his record of ser-
vice with the United tSates Army
in pursuit of Pancho Villa and in
World War I. He enlisted both
times, becoming an officer while
serving with the AEF.
The mayor said he was not cer-
tain of his stains R> mayor now.
Petitions have been circulated
through file town carrying names
of citizens testifying the charges
were false. He said he did not
know whether the City Commission
had accepted the resignation,.
Hoffman’s statement said hen
would finance an audit of city
books. In addition, he proposed a
gpecial election which he also would
pay for. He has served nearly eight
years, . ~
His statement also said:
UI do not hesitate to'fltate I have
never had anything to hurt me so
deeply aa to have my loyalty to my
country questioned.”
In Dallas the Federal Bureau of
Investigation confirmed Hoffman’s
denial of the rumors, saying it had
no record nor recollection of in-
vestigating Hoffman.
