W. R. WHEELER
You're contributing
more than you thought
BALTIMORE, Md. (AP)—When
you paid your federal income lax
this year, chances are you contrib-
uted more to your government’s
operation than the amount of the
tax.
Did you fasten the withholding
statement to the tax form with a
paper clip? Well, Internal Reve-
nue Service saved the clip.
Between now and the April 15
filing deadline, the Baltimore IRS
Office will collect enough paper
clips to supply its receiving de-
partment for the coming year.
John Tamburo, In charge of the
mail receiving room, says he has
not ordered a paper clip for his
department in 10 years.
South Plains College Mathemat-
ics Instructor W. R. Wheeler has
been selected to participate in the
National Science Foundation sum-
mer program.
Under the NSF program, Wheeler
will enroll at San Jose State Col-
lege at San Jose, California, on
June 20 to study functional analy-
sis, functional concepts of geome-
try and present day application of
mathematics in science and indus-
try.
Wheeler selected San Jose State
over Michigan State and the Uni-
versity of Kansas because the Cali-
fornia college’s program will be
directed strictly for junior college
math teachers.
The National Foundation pays
the tuition and expenses of those
selected to participate in the pro-
gram, which indirectly ties in with
national defense.
Among the objectives of the pro-
gram is to offer lectures and sem-
inars designed to deepen subject
matter and to offer a greater chal-
lenge to students who have a spe-
cial aptitude for mathematics and
science.

Ramsey opponent sees
plot by conservatives
CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) — Don
Yarborough, campaigning for Lt.
Gov. Ben Ramsey’s job, said Fri-
day he opposed a sales tax “be-
cause it would push a lot of people
over the financial brink.’’
He charged that Ramsey, form-
er Gov. Allan Shivers and Jack
Cox have formed “a tricky trio of
special interest politicians who are
trying to cram a general sales tax
onto Texans.”

QUESTION: Why does a coyote howl at the moon?
* * *
ANSWER: Coyotes are American prairie wolves. They are
about the aize of a small dog and have soft, shaggy fur and a
bushy tall. They are found in the West and Southwest.
\ .en they are disturbed, they bark like dogs. At night, they
often howl, just as dogs do, because they are lonely or rest-
less or want to attract the attention of other coyotes. Nature
specialists aay there la nothing to Indicate that coyotes bowl at
the moon. In summer, the coyote la useful because lt eats
gophers and other rodent pests. But in winter, when Its natural
prey has gone underground, lt becomes troublesome and Is apt
to eat poultry and even small livestock.
* * *
FOR YOU TO DO: Visit the ooyote cage at the soo and notice
how similar they are to many dogs which are used as pets.
