Here I
do to occupy your day’s time? In
some instances, our mind wanders
into things we NEED TO DO but
don’t know when we will find the
time to get to it. This applies to

...gain, . . .the time came when I
had to do something about it! I
thought, and thought, and thought
some more. . .and finally decided I
better GET WITH IT as it wasn’t
going to do itself.
My first project was doing
some “cleaning out” of a notebook
in which I had “stored” material
for later use. Sometime ago I
started a notebook, with different
headings, of research sources that
would be not only helpful to me,
but someone else also. That ONE
NOTEBOOK has now grown into
THREE! But I found a lot of
“goodies” that I will use in writing
this column in the future but some
of it has already been passed on.

LEGAL DESCRIPTIONS. It reads
“Do you give up when you come
to the legal description of a prop-
erty in a deed? You don’t know
what “S 68” means, and you won-
der how to figure out the shape of
that old farm if you can’t under-
stand these directions. Keep in
mind that each degree(°) can be
subdivided into 60-minutes (‘),
and each minute can be subdivided
into 60 seconds (“). Thus in a
deed, you may come across a
measurement such as “N 15° 37’
10” E’). These directions with the
degrees are called “bearings”. In
other words, a bearing is the angle
from the north or south - which-
ever is nearest, with the added des-
ignation of east or west - which-
ever applies. (A bearing can never
be greater than 90°). The meas-
urements of boundary lines (in
contrast to the directions of bound-
ary lines) is another problem for
us. The old deeds have two differ-
ent systems of measuring, linear
and chain. Therefore, we find the
following terms and equivalents:
16.5 feet = 1 rod, or 1 pole, or
1 perch
40 rods = 1 furlong
8 furlongs = 1 mile
1 chain = 100 links, or 66 feet,
or 4 rods
1 link = 7.92 inches
A square chain = 16 square
rods, or 1/10 acre.
With this being a Railroad
town, the following information
may be of help to you: “If your
ancestors had a social security
number of 700-728, he worked for
the railroad at some time, proba-
bly between 1937-1943. The RR
Retirement Pension was set up at
the same lime as Social Security
and railroaders received their own
SS numerical prefix. The RR
Pension Records arc available
from the Railroad Retirement
Board, 844 Rush St., Chicago, Illi-
nois 60611.
Texas has a State-Wide Death
Index: Texas records are indexed
state-wide starting in 1903 when
death records were first being kept
in Texas. Indexes through at least
1973 are in many local libraries.
In visiting the local courthouse,
don’t just ask for a WILL. . .ASK
FOR THE PROBATE RECORD.
This will give you the records of
any estate distribution and related
documents for a person who died
without a will.
Have you consulted your copy
of the GENEALOGICAL HAND-
BOOK for periods when slates
started compiling vital statistics?
This book is well worth its cost
and will answer a BUNCH of your
questions. . .without your ever
getting out of your chair to search.
