Two Local Run-Off Races Set...
• Meredith Elected Co. Attorney
Fairfield attorney J. Keith
Meredith defeated incumbent Bob
Gage for the Freestone County At-
torney’s position during the
Democratic Primary Election held
Tuesday, March 10.
Meredith tallied 1,799 votes in
his winning effort and Gage re-
ceived 1,591 votes, according to
unofficial returns from the Free-
stone County Courthouse.
Gage was seeking his sixth
term as County Attorney. This was
Meredith’s first attempt at public
office. Meredith won the County
Attorney’s position Tuesday since
no Republican was on the ballot to
face the winner of the Democratic
primary in the November General
Election.
Voters in Freestone County, as
well as in every county in Texas
and ten other states participated in
the “Super Tuesday” election.
Voters chose from national, suite

Two local races will be de-

City Fathers Receive $5,131
For Obsolete City Equipment
The Teague City Council
opened bids for obsolete City
Equipment during their regular
meeting held Monday evening,
March 9th and received a total of
$5,131 for the equipment.
The highest bid received was
$1,956 from Waco Machinery and
Parts for a 1963 Caterpillar
Maintainor. Other items sold to
the highest bidder included a
tractor to Dogwood Sales for
$1,800, a fire truck to Don Stirton
for $750, Deer Chains to Waco
Machinery and Parts for $275, a
Ford truck to Glenn Hall for $200,
and a ’88 Dodge for SI00 and van
for S50 to Marc Raymond.
Freestone Ambulance Board
member Linda Allison presented
the City Council with a proposed
budget for one year totaling
$172,565. Council members had
asked the ambulance service to
prepare a budget for review.
The proposed budget figures
included pay hikes for EMT’s
from $30 per 12 hour shift to
$4.25 per hour per 12 hour shift.
EMT salaries were the highest
figure on the proposed budget
coming in at S74.460. Figures
included with the proposed budget
show that salaries to EMT’s
during the past three years totaled
$30,308 per year. The new figure
came from having two EMT’s on
standby 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year. The second highest
expense on the budget was for
dispatching to Carol’s Answering
Service for $37,230. This figure
came from paying a dispatcher
$4.25 per hour, 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. The city of
Teague currently pays this for
dispatching, which not only
includes ambulance service, but
police, fire and city dispatching.
Expenditures for 1989-91 by
the ambulance service showed
yearly totals of $65,336 for 1989,
$70,807 for 1990 and $65,152 for
1991. Allison told the council that

Guy Ward, Managing Resident
Engineer of Buffalo, will be in
charge of this construction, Ward
stated that all of this work would
be completed this summer.
Clark Construction of San
Antonio was the successful bidder
on the work.
It came to a 3-2 vote, but the
Mexia State School was on the
short side and the Governor’s task
force favored the Mexia State
School as one. of two in Texas to
close. The other chosen was the
Travis State School located in
Austin.
The vote was taken in Austin
shortly before noon on Thursday,
March 5th. The task force’s
recommendations were presented
to the Governor the following day
and Gov. Richards now has until
March 26th to either accept or
reject the recommendations. If
accepted, the move will be
submitted to U.S. Judge Barefoot
Sanders for final approval.
No date has been set for the
plosing of the two schools, but
according to reports one will be
closed in 1995 and the other will
close in 1999. No one knows
which facility will be closed first,
if either of them are closed.
Citizens in Limestone,
Freestone and surrounding
counties arc urged to either write,
call or fax a message to the
Governor’s office asking for the
Mexia State School to remain
open. Letters should be addressed
to Gov. Ann Richards, P.O. Box
13428, Austin, Texas 7871 1. Fax
messages should be sent to 512-
463-1849 and the Governor’s
office telephone number is 1 -800-
843-5789.
The move to close two of the
thirteen state school’s in Texas
came from an agreement reached
last year to settle a long running
federal lawsuit against the slate’s
system for caring for mentally
retarded people. Governor
Richards appointed the five
member task force to make the
recommendations to her.
District 5 State Senator Jim
Turner is one of a number of area
office holders working towards
keeping the Mexia State School
open. “Even the members of the
Facilities Review Task Force who
voted to close Mexia Slate School
ranked it at the top among all state
schools in quality of care and cost
efficiency,” said Senator Turner.
“The message seems to be that if

Harvick Announces
For Place 1 On
City Council
-By Cheryl Harvick-
I, Cheryl L. Harvick, am an-
nouncing my candidacy for City
Council Place 1 and would appre-
ciate your vote for a change in
Teague.
I am a graduate from Teague
High School. I have attended
MCC and Sam Houston State Uni-
versity. I am presently employed
by The Texas Department of
Human Services as a Medicaid
Eligibility Specialist for the Aged
and Disabled. My husband,
Robert Harvick, is employed by
Northwestern Resources in Jewett.
We were married in Teague and
have remained property owners at
our present address for the past 12
years. We have two children,
Michael, 8 and Christine 2. We
are members of the First United
Methodist Church in Teague, and
have been active in several of
Teague's organizations and activi-
ties.
As stated above, we have lived
in Teague for several years and
have seen little or no change. Yes,
we now have a prison that will
employee some residents of
Teague, but we arc also faced with
the possible closure of the Mexia
State School, one of our local
leading employers. We as citi-
zens, must look towards our future
and find ways to grow and
strengthen our community. For
this reason I am asking for your
vote in May, for City Council
Place 1. Your vote will be a vote
for growth and stability for Teague
and our citizens.

you run an outstanding school and

well, you will be closed first.”
“The three members of the
live-member task force who voicd
to close Mexia State school cast a
philosophical vote against
institutional care by closing the
largest schools,” senator Turner
said. “In pursuit of their agenda,
they disregarded their statutory
obligation.”
Senator Turner pointed out that
the Legislature had set specific
criteria for closure: quality of
service, availability of alternative
services, geographic distribution,
alternative uses for each facility,
cost issues and economic impact
on surrounding communities. “If
you look at that list, the Mexia
State School clearly deserves to
remain open,” Senator Turner
said.
Turner thanked Chairwoman
Linda Parrish and member Bert
Williams of the task force for
weighing the Legislature’s criteria
correctly and voting to keep Mexia
State School open. “Chairwoman
Parrish and Mr. Williams carried
their rcsponsibilty to make a
fair decision based on the factors
set by statute,” said Senator
Turner.
The decision also failed to take
economic impact into account,
said Turner. “Recently Gov.
Richards fought to keep the
General Motors plant open in
Arlington. Closing the Mexia Stale
School would have an economic
impact on Limestone County six
times greater than closing the GM
plant would have had on
Arlington,” Senator Turner said.
