Thi* year* district operations
are fast coming to a close with
43 percent of the landowners sign-
ed up as cooperators after less thau
four years operation in spite of
the fact that we have experienced
the worst drouth this country has
ever known during the last 2 1-2
years. Out of 203 district coopera-
tors, 129 have applied one or more
conservation practices to date. Ot-
hers have not had an opportunity
to apply or accomplish any conser-
vation measures due to e ther the
drouth or the fact that they only
recently signed up and have not
had sufficient time as yet In face
of the continued drouth, 82 coop-
erators have never the less applied
one or more conservation pratt les
this year.
There has been much evidence
during the drouth of benefits de-
rived from conservation practiced
before and during the drouth.
Such benefits include larger per-
cent Iamb crops, heavier lambs and
calves, heavier wool and mohair
clips, ic. > fecu bought, and moit
ground cove.". Ihe last o! which
has enabled • ie ianchor to make
more efficient use of the rain they
normally received, but it was hard
for them to reduce their livestock
numbers for one reason or another.
With ranchers more grass con-
scious than ever, we can look for-
ward to a more speedy range im-
provement program than we have
experienced in the past.
We have the best winter cover
crop program started in the part
of the district that has been for-
tunate enough to have gotten good
fall rains than we have ever had.
We believe that with this start,
that this practice wlil spread rapid-
ly in the future.
Highlights of other activities in
the district during the year included
the essay contest among high school
| students on the subject of “Soil
Conservation Is Evcrybodys Job”
which was sponsored by the Fort
Worth Press and the adult grass
judging contest sponsored hy the
Hill Country Association of Soil
Conservation Districts. In the es-
say contest, 78 local students enter-
ed compared to only 11 the year
before. Deana Craven won 10th
place and Kavola Schneider 19th
place in this region of 54 Soil Con-
servation Districts with several
thousand essays entered. In the
m. „ „.
grass judging contest Van C.
Brown won first place in individual
judging among sixty entries from
several Soil Conservation Districts.
In the group judging. Bob Neal,
Tommie hMurr and Jimmy Reick
won third place among fourteen
groups entered from several dis-
tricts.
