MADRID — Maria Shara-
povas reward for advancing to
the second round of the Madrid
Open on Sunday is a match
against Eugenie Bouchard, one
of the most outspoken players
against the Russians return af-
ter a doping ban.
Pro tennis
Madrid Open
Sharapova recovered from a
shaky opening to defeat Mirjana
Lucic-Baroni of Croatia 4-6,
6-4, 6-0 in the first round.
Playing in her second tourna-
ment since a 15-month doping
suspension, Sharapova denied
there would be extra motivation
to defeat Bouchard after the Ca-
nadian previously called her “a
cheater” and said she should be
banned for life from the sport.
“It’s not the way I go about
my job,” the 30-year-old Shara-
pova said. “Ive been in the pub-
lic eye since I was a veiy young
girl. I’ve heard a lot of things. If
everything affects you on and off
the court, I think that would be a
really challenging position to be
in. It’s not the way I think. My
tennis speaks for itself, and that’s
what I focus on.”
Monday’s match against
Bouchard, the 2014 Wimbledon
finalist, will be Sharapova’s sixth
since getting back on tour after
testing positive for meldonium
at last year’s Australian Open.
She played her first tournament
after the ban in Stuttgart last
month, being eliminated in the
semifinals by 17th-ranked Kristi-
na Mladenovic of France.
In other matches Sunday,
top-seeded Angelique Kerber of
Germany defeated Timea Babos
of Hungary7 6-4, 6-2, while de-
fending champion Simona Ha-

After moving into the sec-
ond round of the Madrid
Open on Sunday, Sharapova
said it’s too early to think
about the July tournament.
“I mean, look, I would love
to be in a position to compete
in that event,” she said. “It’s
very meaningful to me. But
it’s just too far down the line
right now.”

Sharapova, who is also ex-
pected to play in Rome later
this month, has been playing
on wild-card entries because
she lost her ranking following
the doping suspension.
The decision on her wild
card for Wimbledon may not
come until June 20, accord-

Roundup
Harman could have drawn it
up differently, but not any better.
Switching from a 5-wood to a
3-w7ood for his 271-yard shot in
the 18th, he w7ent so long that he
needed relief from a corporate
chalet. His chip became harder
because of tree limbs that made
him go low, and his chip came
out soft and barely got onto the
wasn’t from a lack of trying.
Johnson made the cut on the
number, and then went 67-67on
the weekend, including a 15-foot
birdie putt on the final hole, to
nearly pull out another victory.
“I didn’t have a lot of time off,
so I didn’t really know what to
expect this week because I didn’t
really get to practice leading into
this tournament, either,” John-
son said. “Not much has
changed. The first couple days I
didn’t play that great, but really
played nicely on Saturday and
Sunday and so I’m happy with
where the game is going into
next week.”
Perez did his part, bouncing-
back from a double bogey on the
14th hole that took him out of
the lead by making birdies on
the 16th and 18th holes for a 68
that he thought might be good
enough for a playoff with John-
son, the world’s No. 1 player, and
Harman.
“Hell of an up-and-down
from back there,” Perez said. “Lie
deserves it. He played great.”
lep beat Kristyna Pliskova of the chanov of Russia 6-2, 7-6 (8),
Czech Republic 6-1,6-2.

And then he rolled in a 30-
foot birdie putt for a 4-under 68
and a one-shot victory Sunday
over Johnson and Pat Perez.
“I didn’t hit a great chip. It
didn’t turn out veiy good,” Har-
man said. “But I guess it went
w7here it was supposed to.”
The greens at Eagle Point
wrere so pure that Harman knew
it was good when the ball w7as 5
feet from the cup. He turned
and pumped his arms in a wild
celebration that ended in a hug
with his caddie, Scott Tway, for a
victoiy that was a long time
coming.
Harman w7on for the first
time in nearly three years.
For Johnson, playing for the
first time since a freak accident
knocked him out of the Masters,
it was the first time in nearly
three months that he left a PGA
Tour event without the trophy. It
