Police: Assault suspect
gets into scuffle at city jail
A man who was arrested
Sunday on an assault charge re-
portedly beat a Denton police
detention officer on Monday af-
ternoon in a solitary confine-
ment cell in the city jail, accord-
ing to department spokesman
Shane Kizer.
Kizer said the suspect, 19-
year-old Karveh Johnson, was
trying to make a phone call from
a standard jail cell when he start-
ed banging the receiver against
the wall. Two male detention of-
ficers then removed Johnson and
walked him to a solitary confine-
ment cell, he said.
Johnson, he said, resisted of-
ficers when they tried to walk
him inside the cell without
handcuffs. Both officers took
Johnson to the ground as the cell
door closed and locked behind
them, briefly trapping them in-
side, Kizer said.
Johnson struck one of the of-
ficers multiple times in the head
before other officers were able to
open the cell door, he said. One
of the officers suffered head in-
juries but did not need to be tak-
en to the hospital, Kizer said. He
did not know whether addition-
al charged would be filed for the
assault, he said.
Johnson since has been
transferred to Denton County
Jail, where he was booked on
charges of assault causing bodily
injury and possession of a con-
trolled substance.
the man now was trying to steal
the whole moped, according to
the report.
Police returned to the scene
and arrested the man on a
charge of theft between $100
and $750. The man also had re-
turned to the apartment with a
41-year-old woman, who, after a
search, was arrested on two
charges of possession of a con-
trolled substance. Both were
taken to Denton City Jail.
5300 block of East Mc-
Kinney Street — Someone
pushed a 69-year-old woman to
the ground on Monday after-
noon at a mobile home park and
immediately left the scene, ac-
cording to a police report.
Officers couldn’t find the
man when they arrived in the
neighborhood, the report said.
The woman’s granddaughter
initially called police and said
the woman was in pain from the
injury. The police report did not
specify the extent of her injuries,
and no arrests were made.
North Locust Street and
Hercules Lane — Witnesses
said they saw a man attacking a
50-year-old woman near a vehi-
cle on Monday night at the in-
tersection of North Locust
Street and Hercules Lane.
According to a police report,
witnesses followed the car for a
short time before they lost sight
of it. No arrests were made. The
police report did not include fur-
ther details.
ttAs the head electrician on
that project, I hope everyone
enjoys it. It was truly a lot of
hard work “behind the
scenes.”
