The weather community has been impressed with the imag-
es being produced by NOAA’s newest weather satellite
known as G0ES16. The detail and resolution of the cloud
images is unmatched.
The satellite was launched last November and it remains in
a period of testing for the next several months. Not only
does it have a much higher resolution, it can send back
images every minute.
The satellite will be a tremendous help in increasing the
accuracy of severe weather forecasts.

County confirms first
Zika patient for 2017
Local health officials an-
nounced they have confirmed
the first Denton County patient
with the Zika vims for 2017, a
person from Trophy Club who
traveled to Mexico.
County health officials said
the person no longer is conta-
gious. To date, there has been no
local transmission of the disease
in Denton County.
The vims spreads primarily
through bites from mosquitoes
carrying the vims, though the vi-
ms has also spread through sex-
ual transmission. Most people
with Zika experience mild, flu-
like symptoms, including a fever,
rash, joint pain, and red eyes.
The illness typically lasts a week.
The Denton County Health
Department recommends peo-
ple who have traveled recently
and are experiencing symptoms,
as well as those patients diag-
nosed with the Zika vims, pro-
tect themselves from mosquito
bites and practice safe sex.
Mexico is one of a number of

countries with active transmis-

The U.S. Constitution and state constitution clearly spell
out that the legal voting age is 18, a national standard.
This also is the case in the state of Maryland, but two
cities there have lowered the municipal voting age to 16-
years-old: Takoma Park and Hyattsville.
In both cities, the city council took the actions to allow
for 16- and 17-year-olds to vote. Takoma Park was first in
2013, then Hyattsville in 2015.
Last year, San Francisco put the measure on the Novem-
ber 2016 ballot, but the effort failed. That same election,
neighboring town Berkeley passed a proposition to allow 16-
and 17-year-olds to vote in school board elections.
So far, none of these changes have been challenged in

for the city’s first CycloDia on

Kinney, Oak, Austin and Hickory
streets will remain open only to
bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
CycloDia began 40 years ago
in Bogota, Columbia, and is
hosted across the country and in
major Texas cities.
Denton’s CycloDia will include
yoga and Zumba classes, bicycle
