Matt Hynek’s memories of the 2016 UIL state ten-
nis tournament leave a lot to be desired for the Argyle
junior.
After a fast start in the opening round of the Class
4A singles, Hynek lost in three sets to Canyon Lake’s
Kendall Murray. The disappointment from that expe-
rience ignited a determination in Hynek to make it
back to the state tournament this year.
On Thursday, Hynek will be back in College Sta-
tion at Texas A&M along with seven other compet-
itors vying for the Class 4A singles championship.
Hynek will face Joseph Diaz of Fort Stockton in one of
the four quarterfinal matches beginning at 8 a.m. at
the George R Mitchell Tennis Center.
Hynek earned his return trip to the state tourna-
ment after winning the Class 4A Region II singles ti-
tle with a straight set victories against Adam Morris,
of Henderson, in the finals and Paris’ Matt Cochran in
the semifinals.

Former Guyer star Hill transferring to Tech
Former Guyer volleyball star Emily Hill has trans-
ferred to Texas Tech after a standout freshman season
at Mississippi State.
Hill, who graduated from Guyer in 2016, immedi-
ately made an impact in the Southeastern Conference
for the Bulldogs when she started 24 matches this
past season as a freshman. She was the team’s second-
leading attacker with 382 kills, which was good for a
top-10 ranking in the conference.
Hill, a 6-1 outside hitter, will be immediately eligi-
ble for the 2017 season and will have three seasons of
eligibility remaining.
As a four-year starter at Guyer, Hill earned two
all-district MVP nods and was the Denton Record-
Chronicle’s All-Area MVP in 2014 when she led all
Class 6A players in Dallas-Fort Worth in kills. She
was a top 50 recruit nationally coming out of Guyer.
At Tech, Hill will join three area players in Katy
Keenan, Eighmy Dobbins and Allison White, all of
whom played their high school careers at Argyle.

matchup with Cleveland, the
Celtics cashed in their 25 per-
cent chance to land the No. 1
pick in the June draft.
“Game last night, Game 7, a
tough Washington team. Game
tomorrow against a tough
Cleveland team. And now we
squeeze in the lottery and win
the pick. I don’t know what’s
happening here. It’s pretty
amazing,” said Wye Grousbeck,
a Celtics owner who represented
them on stage.
The Lakers moved up one
spot to second to hold onto their
pick. They would have had to
trade it to Philadelphia if it fell
outside the top three.
“When [Deputy Commis-
sioner Mark Tatum] called out
No. 4 and he said it wasn’t us, I
said ‘Urn, that’s it, that’s all I care
about,1" said Johnson, the Hall of
Famer in his first year as Lakers
president. “I didn’t know where
we were going to land from
there, but I was like ‘OK, I can
breathe now.
The Celtics finished disman-
tling the team that beat the Lak-
ers to win the 2008 champion-
ship when they traded Paul
Pierce and Kevin Garnett to
Brooklyn on the night of the
2013 draft. Boston acquired the
Nets’ 2014, 2016 and 2018 first-
round picks, as well as the rights
to swap in 2017.
The timing was perfect for
the Celtics because Brooklyn fin-
ished with the worst record in
the league.
“And look what I leave be-
hind for the Celts on my way out
[No. 1] pick,” Pierce wrote on
Twitter.
The 76ers will pick third,
while Phoenix fell two spots and
is fourth.
“I’m excited,” 76ers rookie
center Joel Embiid said. “We
jumped up one more spot. I
wish we would have gotten the
No. 1 pick, but we trust the pro-
cess and it’s going to be exciting
to see what we’re going for.”
Their victory made it three
straight years the team with the
best odds has won the lottery, af-
ter going the previous decade
without a victory. Minnesota
snapped that streak by getting
eventual Rookie of the Year
Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015
and Philadelphia emerged with
Ben Simmons last season.
The draft is June 22 at Bar-
clays Center in Brooklyn.

Murray eliminated by Fognini in Rome
ROME — Defending champion Andy Murray
was eliminated by local favorite Fabio Fognini 6-2,
6-4 before a raucous crowd in his opening match at
the Italian Open on Tuesday.
Italy’s top player at No. 29, Fognini frustrated the
top-ranked Murray with drop shots and other aggres-
sive play.
The unpredictable Fognini led 5-1 in the second
set and nearly let Murray force a third set with a series
of errors but finally closed it out when he served for
the match for a second time.

NHL announces finalists for top GM
NEW YORK — Peter Chiarelli of the Edmonton
Oilers, Pierre Dorion of the Ottawa Senators and Da-
vid Poile of the Nashville Predators are the finalists for
the NHL general manager of the year award.
The NHL announced the finalists Tuesday night.
Chiarelli, a first-time finalist, guided the Oilers as
they turned in their first 100-point season since 1986-
87, a 33-point jump from last season, with a handful
of trades.
Ottawa reached the Eastern Conference finals for
the first time since 2007 in Dorion’s first season after
being promoted.
Poile’s moves helped the Predators reach the post-
