CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kyle
Busch had a gash on his fore-
head and blood running down
his nose when he promised pay-
back to Joey Logano. The two
had a brief post-race pit road
brawl that can be seen on TMZ,
the Today Show and, really, just
about anywhere.
Motor sports
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series
COMMENTARY
The tussle shoved NASCAR
into the watercooler talk Mon-
day alongside the NCAA Tour-
nament, and the reason why
should be awake-up call to every
stakeholder in the stagnant
sport because, like it or not,
Busch getting pummeled by Lo-
gano’s crew is the lasting memo-
ry of the race.
NASCAR can make any for-
mat change under the sun, try
gimmicks, slick marketing or the
Monster Energy Girls, but its
mainstream audience wants dra-
ma. Only racing fans know that a
late caution nearly cost Martin
Truex Jr. the win, that Brad Kese-
lowski lost the race because of a
car part failure and that his disa-
bled race car likely led to the
Busch-Logano brouhaha.
Inside the racing bubble, all
of this is both a dream come true
and a nightmare.
NASCAR doesn’t want to be
known for brawling, and its
drivers don’t particularly enjoy
the scrutiny and/or punishment
that comes from bad behavior.
But this sport is in desperate
need of rivalries, and nothing
gets people talking like a blood-
ied face after a race.
NASCAR Chairman Brian
France suggested the drivers
aren’t likely to receive harsh
penalties.
The Busch-Logano bout
Sunday at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway happened in the pits.
Busch felt that Logano
wrecked him as the two raced
for position past Keselowski’s
slowed car, so he sped down pit
road, leaving the bulk of his Joe
Gibbs Racing crew behind, and
sought out Logano. When he
found his former teammate,
Busch went in swinging.
France seemed to think ev-
erything will be taken care of be-
cause there’s precedent. Al-
though Busch vowed to exact re-
venge, France believes the 2015
blowback from a long-running
feud between Busch teammate
Matt Kenseth and Logano will
put an end to possible payback.
“There will be no retaliation,”
France told SiriusXM NASCAR
Radio. “That will not be happen-
ing. That’s not going to happen
anyway. The drivers understand
what we did a couple of years
ago at Martinsville [suspending
Matt Kenseth two races for
wrecking Logano], that is unac-
ceptable.
“So what happens on the
track, good or for bad for one
driver or another, that’s where it
stays, and we move on to the
next event.”
We’ll see. This incident cer-
tainly hasn’t hurt NASCAR, and
a little bad blood could really Ev-
en up an otherwise slow start to
the season.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — DeMarcus Ware won’t

Broncos as expected. The 12-year NFL veteran is in-
stead retiring from the NFL.
Ware announced his decision Monday on Twitter.
Next to a split image of the Cowboys and Broncos,
Ware wrote, “After a lot of thought and prayer, I’ve
decided to accept the unknown and retire from my
NFL career. Tempting opportunities still present
themselves for me to play and I feel better than I have
in years. However, long-term health of quality of life
outweigh the spark and passion to play that I once
had.”

The NBA announced the penalty Monday, shortly
after Iguodala spoke to the media following practice
and discussed his remarks.
One thing Iguodala made clear about his racially
tinged comments is that he and Golden State coach
Steve Kerr are just fine. He says they have a “great
relationship” and there are no hard feelings.
Iguodala acknowledges he put his team in a tough
spot when he told reporters “I do what master say”
upon finding out he would be resting the next night at
San Antonio — along with Stephen Curry, Draymond
Green and Klay Thompson.

Cavaliers sign Sanders, waive Bogut
CLEVELAND — Larry Sanders walked away
from the NBA. He’s coming back to a team that needs
his help.
Sanders, who left the league two years ago after
five seasons with Milwaukee, signed Monday with the
struggling Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cavs have been in the market for a big man
since Andrew Bogut broke his left leg just 58 seconds
into his debut with Cleveland last week. As expected,
the Cavs waived Bogut.
Because his game is rusty, the Cavs intend to have
Sanders play with their D-League affiliate in Canton
to work on his conditioning and timing.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Poised to return to the
top spot in next week’s world rankings, Angelique
Kerber narrowly avoided an upset at the BNP Paribas
Open on Monday.
Kerber outlasted Pauline Parmentier of France
7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the third round when temperatures
soared to the upper 90s under cloudless skies in the
Southern California desert. That’s nearly 20 degrees
higher than the seasonal average of 78.
One of their games lasted 11 minutes and another
went on for 91/2 minutes. Kerber rallied from a 1-4
deficit in the third set.
