ers to its digital marketing com-
panies, DMV and Speakeasy.
That’s up from 137 sales from
newspaper referrals a year ago.
The strategy that started a
year ago in May to generate rev-
enue from paid digital subscrib-
ers to dallasnews.com “is on tar-
get,” Moroney said.
‘After one full year, we feel
good about the sequential quar-
terly growth,” he said. “We are
making steady progress in
building a base.”
Paid digital subscriptions to-
taled 20,270 as of June 30, an
U.6 percent increase for the
quarter. That gain translated to
2,101 new subscribers for the
three-month period.
Digital subscriptions and
digital and marketing services
are two areas of the business
that “have significant upside op-
portunity and provide the basis
for growing our way into a sus-
tainable business model,” Moro-
ney said.
The company’s total quarter-
ly revenue of $63.1 million de-
clined 5.3 percent from a year
ago. Lower revenue was largely
from a 3.7 percent decline in
newspaper home delivery and a
9 percent decline in printing,
distribution and other revenue.
The company didn’t host
some events in the quarter and
had small declines in revenue
from outside publications that it
prints and distributes. Revenue
from advertising and market
services fell 5.3 percent to $36
million, mostly due to print ad-
vertising declines.
During a conference call with
analysts, Grant Moise, executive
vice president of A. H. Belo and
general manager of The News,
said the company is seeing addi-
tional revenue from its involve-
ment in a national advertising
group made up of the 30 largest
regional newspapers. Moise de-
scribed that gain as enough to
mitigate the decline, but not
enough to get advertising reve-
nue “in the black.”
A. H. Belo also has seen in-
terest in two parking lots and a
small park it’s selling in down-
town Dallas, said chief financial
officer Katy Murray during the
call. A move of its news and cor-
porate operations to the old Dal-
las Public Library next to the
Statler Hotel is still planned for
later this year. Moroney said the
move is on track to begin in Oc-
tober, but he added that there’s
no pressure to vacate the current
headquarters on Young Street.
No formal decision has been
made about what will become of
the 325,000-square-foot cam-
pus, Murray said.

The Dallas Morning News
Revenue from digital and
marketing services are growing
for the parent company of The
Dallas Morning News and the
Denton Record-Chronicle, but
not enough to offset declines
from its newspaper business.
A. H. Belo Corporation re-
ported a second-quarter loss of
$805,000, or 4 cents a share, af-
ter reporting a profit in the same
period last year of $693,000, or
3 cents a share.
“While the second quarter
decline in print-related revenues
was challenging, we continue to
see excellent growth from digital
marketing services,” said Jim
Moroney, chairman, president
and chief executive officer of A.
H. Belo, in a statement.
Digital and marketing ser-
vices revenue increased 14.8 per-
cent from the prior year, mostly
from DMV’s growth of 50.3 per-
cent, Moroney said. DMV is one
of two digital marketing compa-
nies that A. H. Belo owns as part
of its strategy to boost revenue
from sources outside the print
newspaper.
A. H. Belo is leveraging The
Dallas Morning News as part
of that strategy, Moroney said.

Family sues over jail lobby death
DE-1627243-01
DALLAS (AP) - The wife
and mother of a Texas man who
died after a struggle with depu-
ties in the Dallas County jail lob-
by filed a lawsuit alleging exces-
sive force by four deputies and
lack of training by the Dallas
County Sheriff’s Office.
A Dallas County grand jury
declined to indict deputies in-
volved in the August 2015 death
of Joseph Hutcheson when it
convened last year. The lawsuit
filed Monday by Nicole Hutche-
son, the man’s wife, and Ruth
Boatner, his mother, alleges the
deputies used excessive force in
subduing the 48-year-old Ar-
lington man, who had entered
the lobby seeking help.
The lawsuit, which names
the deputies — Fernando Reyes,
Trenton Smith, Betty Stevens
and Elvin Hayes— as well as
Dallas County, also alleges the
Sheriff’s Office failed to train the
deputies and security officers
correctly in use of force. The law-
suit cites an autopsy report in
which a medical examiner noted
a 6-inch bruise on the back of
Hutcheson’s neck.
“Joseph Hutcheson came to
the Dallas County Jail scared
and begging for help,” family at-
torney Scott Palmer said in a
statement.
The deputies had said
Hutcheson entered thej ail lobby
proclaiming that his wife was
chasing him and was going to
kill him. They said he was forced
to the ground and handcuffed
after pacing in the lobby because
he posed a threat to himself and
others.
The medical examiner’s of-
fice ruled the death a homicide.
