old man was hospitalized with
minor injuries Tuesday after-
noon after a single-engine plane
crashed in a field that is the
home to Northwest ISD’s Out-
door Learning Center at 7773
Mulkey Lane, according to the
Texas Department of Public
Safety.
No schoolchildren were in
the area during the incident,
DPS spokesman Lonny Haschel
said.
The pilot, a 52-year-old man,
told authorities the small air-
craft lost power before it de-
scended into a tree in the learn-
ing center about 3:30 p.m.
The plane’s wings were
ripped off in the tree before it fell
into a field near a pavilion, Has-
chel said.
Haschel would not identify
the two men.
They took off from North-
west Regional Airport, about 3
miles southeast from the crash
site, he said. Haschel did not
know where they live.
He also didn’t know the pas-
senger’s injuries. He said the
79-year-old, who was taken to
Baylor Scott and White Medi-
cal Center in Grapevine, re-
sponded to paramedics on the
scene.

Woman found in Plano
fire dies, child injured
Officials in Plano say a wom-
an has died and a child is in crit-
ical condition after they were
found inside an apartment that
was on fire.
Plano police said Tuesday that
they and fire officials are still in-
vestigatingthe Monday afternoon
fire. The cause of the fire has not
yet been determined.
Police said both the woman
and child had injuries and se-
vere bums. Police say the wom-
an was pronounced dead shortly
after being taken to a hospital.
Police did not yet have ages of
the woman or child.
illegal government detention.
Peter Schulte, among more
than 100 attorneys offering free
legal services to those detained
at the airport, said Tuesday that
screening travelers can take
hours, but any detention longer
than four hours must be consid-
ered unlawful.
He says it appears more than
a dozen people were detained at
the airport Monday by U.S. Cus-
toms and Border Protection.
But the actual number is unclear
because he and other lawyers
must rely on family members or
airline passengers who notice
travelers being pulled aside.

Luna used his position to help a
