ing with Mr. and Mrs. Junior Briles

Mrs. H. H. Talley and family dur-
ing the week. ,
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Lewallen
and son, Wade of Blackwell visited
with old friends Saturday.
Mrs. E. E. Phillips and her sis-
ters, Miss Kate Callaway of Rock-
well, and Mrs. W. N. Speights of
Royce City were in Monkstown
Thursday to attend funeral services
for Mr. J. M. Fair. The late Mr.
Fair was the father of Mrs. John
Q. Callaway of Brownwood.
. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hutson spent
the weekend in Lubbock visiting
his Bister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Marsoden and family. Brenda re-
turned home with them after
epending the past two weeks there.
Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Ash, Dale and
the former superintendent of Dub-
lin and county schools when they
lived at May, has accepted a new
position as mathematics teacher at
Huckabay School neur Stephen-
ville.
Mrs. Shannon’s mother, Mrs.
Roxie Elliot, lives at 1287 West
Frey in Stephenville, and two
brothers, Jack Arthur and D. C.
Arthur, also live in Stephenville.
Mrs. Shannon attended Abilene
Christian College last summer un-
der the American Studies Program,
but this summer is enrolled in the
Graduate School. ,
The American Studies Program
at Abilene Christian College af-
fords some 100 schoolteachers each
summer full tuition for six weeks
of study in courses related to the
American heritage.

Held Thursday

ABILENE (Spl)—Mrs. J. B.
Shannon, a graduate student at
Abilene Christian College, has won
a silver service and a year’s doc-
torate study resulting from a con-
test she entered.
Mrs. Shannan, an English
teacher at May, Texas, for 12
years, will be moving to Stephen-
ville this summer. She will begin
in the fall as English teacher at
Stephenville High.
As a scholarship winner on the
Abilene Christian College Ameri-
can Studies Program last summer,
Mrs. Shannon wrote two papers
entitled, “Cotton Mather and
Witchcraft,” and “Classical Edu-
cation in Early America.” These
were entered in a scholarship con-
test co-sponsored by the Interna-
tional Silver Co. and the Federal
Council of English Teachers.
These papers, plus 10 others she
had written over the past few
years, won her the scholarship plus
the silver (which was valued at
$662.87). She will use the scholar-
ship at the University of Texas in
about two years.
Mrs, Shannon holds a B.S. from
Daniel Baker College in Brown-
Funeral services for Ben W.
Wann, long time community leader
in the lower Paluxy Valley and
well known throughout Hood and
Erath Counties, were held Thurs-
day at Paluxy Baotist Church. He
was buried at Brooks Cemetery
following the church rites. He was
G7 years of age and for many years
had been a popular citizen of that
country.
Wann, a farmer and rancher,
died Tuesday afternoon in a Ste-
phenviile hospital. Survivors in-
clude his wife; four daughters,
Mrs. Jean Edwards of Fort Worth,
Mrs. Lometa Barton of Bryan and
Mrs. Cynthia Mclntire and Miss
Clenda Wann of Paluxy; a son
James Wann of Tolar, and a foster
son, Cave Wann, of Knox City.
He was a brother of S. M. Wann
of Fort Worth.

Former Resident of
Lone Oak Community
Dies in Dublin
Funeral services were held from
the Dublin First Baptist Church,
Sunday, July 12, for Mrs. Rosa
Bell Crawford, who died in the Dub-
lin hospital, Friday, July 10, fol-
lowing a heart attack. Rev. Ray T.
Sones of Stephenville and Dr.
Janies Bradford, pastor of the
church, conducted the services.
Mrs. Crawford was born in Ste-
phenville, April 17, 1874, the
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Ross. She was married to
Will Crawford in 1897. The family
dress slipper in white, black pat-
ent. School shoes and canvas.
Women’s and Misses’
lived in the Lone Oak Community -
a number of years before moving
to Dublin. There, Mr. Crawford f
died in 1943. C
She was a member of the Bap-
tist Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs.
John Harbin of Dublin, one son,'
W. C. Crawford of Kerrville; one ••
brother, Sam Ross of Stephenville >
and a number of nieces and nep-'
hews. • ;
Interment was in the Johnson *
Cemetery with Harrell Funeral •

Mrs. Bob Wegner is still a pati-
ent in the Hico Hospital following
Surgery on Thursday. We hope a
speedy recovery for her. -

Grand Prairie visited with Mr. and
Mrs. George Bowie and Preacher
Bowie and family during the week-

and family were her sisters, Mrs.
Vera Grant, Mrs. Juanita Askew,
Mrs. Vida Rucker and husband,
Mrs. J. P. Weadon all of Colum-
bers, Ga.
Mr. and Mrs. George Bowie, Mr.
and Mrs. Preadier Bowie and
family Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Rat-
liff visited Mr. Sam Sutton of
Rising Star on Sunday.
Work is progressing rapidly on
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Preacher
Bowie.
Mike King was taken to Hico to
the hospital after he cut his leg
while at play Sunday. Niqe stitches
were required to close the wound.

night.

In City Park for
Annual Reunion J
All nine of the children of Mrs.
Sarah Chew were present Sunday,
July 19, when the family met in
the recreation building of the city
park for a reunion. Food was
bountiful during the noon hour and
visiting was the order of the rest
of the day.
In addition to Mrs. Sarah Chew,
those attending were her children,
Mrs. Clara Lively, Mr. and Mrs.
Vernon Chew and Sue, Mr. and
Mrs .DeWell Chew and three son of
Hico; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bour-

of Lake Charles, La., are here this
week visiting with relatives. They
were Sunday guests of Mr. and
Mrs. W. S. Davis.
Mr. and Mrs. A, R. Holden of
Throp Springs and Mr. and Mrs.
K. N. Baxley of Stephenville were
visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Gentry last Sunday afternoon.
