Texas Wheat Crop
Lowest Since ’43,
USDA Estimates
Washington 63—The Agricul-
ture Department estimated the
1951 winter wheat crop, which has
been reduced by drought and In-
sects, at only 682,196,000 bushels.
This would compare with a 1950
crop of 760,000,800 bushels.
it estimated production for Kan-
sas at 165,656,000 bushels; Okla-
homa, 42,520,000 bushels, and Tex-
as, 14,433,000 bushels.
The April 1 estimate for 1951
winter wheat was 728,000,000
bushels—an estimate which had
dashed hopes for a much-needed
carryover of 500,000,000 bushel*
on July 1, 1952.
Ifythe 1951 crop turns out as
forecast, It will be the smallest
since 1943 when only 587,000,000
bushel* were produced.

Space Ship That
(in Defy Gravity
Held Possible
By CHARLE8 CORDDRY
UalM PrM* 4«tauUn WMI.r
Langley Field, Va. Wt—Govern-
ment researchers have started to
unravel the knotty problem of
launching a apace ship that will
streak beyond the earth’a gravi-
tational pull.
The research atill Is in a “purely
exploratory’’ stage, according to
John Stack, assistant research
chief of the Laboratory of the Na-
tional Advisory Committee for
Aeronautics. But he added:
“We muat assume that It la
possible to escape the earth's grav-
ity and we must begin to explore
what conditions wa will meet.”
Scientists told some 300 report-
ers, government officials and avia,
tion industry executives who wore
conducted through the NACA lab-
oratory for th# first time that basic
research on space ships already
ha* started. —
The ultimate result of sueh re-
search might be an interplanetary
rocket ship .or a “sky platform’’
which could circle the earth as a
msn-made satellite. But Stack said
researchers are not thinking In
terms of such specific goals.
Scientists still are trying to Blas-
ter the problem of how to attain
"esenpe velocity’’—the speed re-
quired to get a missile beyond the
gravity of tho earth. 8took put the
critical speed "in the areh of 20
tb 25 limea’’ tho speed of sound.
In gathsring preliminary date on
“escape velocity * tiny test models
already have been sent streaking
aloft at speeds approximately to
limea that,of sound.
The NACA also permitted the in-
spection party to take a peek at
one of Ita most prised new facil-
ities at Langley Field—an enorm-
ous trans-sonic wind tunnel. Th#
instrument—which scientists be-
lieve is unequalled by any othar
nation—Is so secret that portions
of It were boarded up fro6) the
visitors’ view.
Officials said the nowly develop-
ed tunnel “will give Amorfca A
tremendous advantags In design*
Ing supersonic jet fighters, ultra-
fast bombers, guided missiles'and
other very high speed aircraft.”
About 75 per eent of diet year's
