000, while others due to big popu-
lation shifts have 100,000 Obvi-
ously the member with the smsll
number is satisfied and is reluctant
to add two or three extra counties.
Population shifts are such that
in several instances two senators
will be in the same district and
many instances like this occur in
representative districts.
Senatorial District
When our present senatorial dis-
trict was established Erath had
about 80,000 and Bell County on
the other end of the district had
4,600, but now Erath has 16,000
and Bell 74,000.
In the tentative senatorial -dis-
trict every county except Coryell
. lo*t population. In the tenta-
tive representative district in the
past ten years Erath and Mills
have lost 2,000 each while Coman-
che has lost 4,000. Even with three
counties, the district will only
have 39,000 compared with the
average of 43,000. Hood County
* has lost 2,500 and with Hood and
Somervell attached to Johnson
. that^ district will only have SO.OOQ.
a Thus both’the counties of my dis-
trict are getting more, than aver-
age share of representation.

On Hawaiian Flowers
One of the most cqjpyeble pro-
grams ever had by the city Garden
Club was the lecture given by
Mrs. Ruth Blakeney Tuesday morn-
ing at the library.
Taking for her subject, “In an
Old Hawaiian Qanlen,” she quite
ably discussed the Uses, shrubs
and flowers of that island and at
the santa Ope interspersed her
lecture yyltb bits of historical in-
formation jin the island in general-
She-twa*. attired in a Hawaiian
costume Ihil wore a pink and yel-
low lei. So wall did the describe
the flowers illustrated ettlored
slides, members'felt as if they had
really seen Hawaii and had caught
a whiff of the sweet and exotfc
fragrance of the garden itself.
Artistically arranged on a table
for all to admire, were flowers
flown from the- island.
Among the visitors present were
a number of Tolar Gardpa Club
members and several local guests.
A short busineas meeting was
held.

1PRATH County will very
** ly be realigned in all its
tricts during the coming ten yi
with the exception of the judiciary.
Bight now we are tied up with
Comanche and Mills ip a proposed
legislative arrangement and that
seems to meet with hearty approv-
al. Erath and Comanche counties
have for long years beqp extremely
cordial. In the senatorial redis-
triciting the set up is not-being
received so well. If a bill that
is now pending should pass the
senatorial district will extend frotp
EUis on the extreme southeast
to Erath on the extreme north
west. In the new congressional dis-
trict that is proposed we will be
located in about the geographical
center. It looks like some of the
members of the Senate and the
House are looking after their
individual well being more than
they are the people they represent,
from a standpoint of our legisla-
tive district fanning we are for-
tunate to have a man like Grady
Perry who seams to want to follow
the wishes of the people. Regard-
less of what may develop it> now
looks like we will soon know what
the final outcome will be,,

happy — all.because the drive

I^HE Stephenville Bar is com-
posed of some of the ablest and
most successful lawyers in Tex-
as. The twelve members of the
association art all adequately fi-
nanced, home owners and our top
citizens. These gentlemen have a
part In all of our affairs, most
of the time in s promiqgnt way.
Litigation in both civil and dis-
trict procedure over a wide ares
is centered here and that does
not take into a e e o u n C private
counsel which is quite a Urge part
of the business of any lawyer. A
fine group — one that takes high
rank iq Texas for itp all around
competence and ability. When there
is a public meeting to be held
about the first thing we do is to
get one of the lawyers to do the
speaking or act as master of cere-
monies. During the last war when
bond drives were conducted eypry
three or four months the usual
procedure was to get one or two
members of the bar association to
present the proposition to the pub-
lic. They perform at funerals,
teach Sunday School classes qnd
serve in to many other worthwhile
ways. It would be hard to get
along without them, indeed.

Meek these thoughts come to mind
because of the devotion and never-
failing smile he wears when in
the presence of his asinted mother.
Bob does not stop at that, how-
ever. His soul mate and two chil-
dren, “Punkey” and Kerry, are the
apple of his sye end share in all
ways the adoration the man shows
for those he holds neisr snd dear.
Maybe we all «>uld take a lesson
Jrom Bob in this one respect—if
not others. It’s a beautiful picture,
this family tree. If Bob Meek has
tny hobbies other than his kindly
attitude toward hif mother and
family wy don’t know about it—
unless it be in the growth of his
insurance business located across
the street from the post office.
And those probably are not what
should be classed as hobbies. Any-
how, they are very fine traits. And
so today we congratulate this won-
derful group of people with special
emphasis on the head of the tribe
—Mr. Robert L. Meek.
GROUP of churches in all
the land are more aggressive
or more' active than those' in
Stephenville. The record wRl bear
this out—in so many ways. ’With-
out commenting on the spiritual
Side of the question, which is an-
other story, we wish tfa say aome-
thing about the improvement of
*burch facilities that saem to ga
on in a never ending way. Last
year the Graham Street Church of
Christ completed anc| occupied one
of the finest structures in Texas.
It is beautiful and attractive from
top to bottom and front to back.
Right now the Methodists art in
the midst of a planning job that
will bring that imposing edfice
and all departments up to a high
state of facility. The original esti-
mate of the cost is said to I*
about $13,500. However, once
started the final cash outlay will
more than likely- be nearer twenty
thousand. The First Baptist also
has cash on hand ip the amount of
$50,000 for a new educational
building, which may or may not be
spent this year. The goal, as we
understand it, is to make the addi-
tion one that will not only take
care af present needs but serve
for yqpfs to come. These three In-
stitutions are mentioned largely
because they have either finished
their plaqs or have them in the
making. All other churches in the
city have been equally qs aggres-
sive in taking care of their vari-
ous requirements. Churches can be
compared to businesses to the ex-
tent that in order to be progres-
sive they have to spAnd money.
And by the same reasoning a
church that is not progressive snd
in step with the times will soon

flO-OFTEN we have wondered
” how membere of Congress
would react to the heavy calla for
caah outlays they reeeive If they
had to produee the money they
are passing out. It U a very easy
matter to give away or spend
other people’s earnings. But the
person who knows beat the value
of a, dollar usually is the one who
gets it by the sweat of his own
brow. Our country is in the midst
of one of the biggest spending
programs it has ever known, much
of the demands going for defense.
There can be no reasonable ob-
jection to setting up dn adequate
defense against any aggressor.
That wa must do.# On the other
hand we wonder If there are not
a great many ways whereby we
can eliminate waste and the habits
of extravagance. If ;<we. ‘can ever
get down to the basis of judgment
used by our horse traders there
is no doubt but what we 'get
along better with our fimrhcee.
The same rule will apply to any
government agency—from precinct
to Washington.
