Raws were completely comirnated by the New York stevedore strike
Miittaiu this week. Refiners ran out of raves and had to shut down.
However,the situation is improving; yesterday and today an increasing number
of stevedores returned to work and raw sugar aeliveries flkX resumed;
startec.
American/Reta :aelting ational should be operating over the weekends
and the Federal and State governments have taken drastic legal steps designed
to reopen the Port in a large way before Monday.
In anticipation of a quick strike settlement New York refiners bought
well in excess of 50,000 tons raw; of all growths, for late kprli/early May
arrival at 6.200. Southern refiners were mainly on the sidelines.
In the world market South Korea bought 6,5u0 tons Cubas at the
equivalent of 3.2d8 fob and India bought 9,500 tons refined from Peru.
Distribution for tne week endlng MrcL tAA 27th totaled 176,961 tons
against 165,520 tons for the week ending March 20th and 177,161 tons during
the tk corresponding week last year. Cumulative figures since January let
arel,69u,192 and 1,913,223 tons for 1954 and 1953 respectively.
