Even With Busy Days There's
Consecration in the Kitchen
God bless my little kitchen, I
love its every nook, and bless me
as 1 do my work, wash pots and
pons and cook. May meals that 1
prepare here, Lord, be seasoned
from above, with all the blessings
of Thy grace, but most of all Thy
love. As we partake of earthly
food, the table for us is spread,
We’ll not forget to thank .Thee,
Lord, who gives us daily bread
So bless my little kitchen, Lord,
and those who enter in, May they
find naught but joy and peace and
happiness therein.
Hang this little motto over your
kitchen sink. “Divine Service Is
Conducted Here Three Times
Daily."

Feed Cost Largest
Item in Egg Test
COLLEGE STATION — Feed
cost* represent between one-b*tf
and two-thirds of the total cost
of producing a dozen eggs. This
makes it just plain good business
to try to get the best feed conver-
sion possible from the laying
flock, points out Ben Wormeli,
extension poultry husbandman. A
good feed conversion is the re-
sult of a combination of a bird
with the breeding to do the job, a
feed with the nutrients to do the
job, and a poultryman with the
persistence and know-how to do
his job.
A study of the results of the
entries in the Texas Random
Sample Performance Egg Pro-
duction Test for the last year pro-
vide* some examples that point out
theinfluence of these factor* on
efficient feed conversion. Body
size of the laying hen is important
because the first feed eaten goes
for maintenance. It is obvious that
it takes more feed to maintain a
5 ib. hen that it does a 4 lb. one,
but the influence Is not often con-
sidered, says Wormeli. In the Ran-
dom Sample Teat, the overage
weight of one 48-bird flock at
540 days of age was 6.03 lbs. This
flock produced a dozen eggs on
4.9 lbs. of feed. Aflotbar entry,
averaging—4.57 lbs,, laid at
same rate, but only used 4.4
of feed
the
lbs.
Two other requirements of the
good layer are a high rate of lay
and high livability. One entry of 48
hens laid 10,560 eggs to 600 days
of age, but another entry produc-
ed only 7,498 eggs during the same
period. The second flock used 4.9
pounds of feed to produce a dozen
eggs while the first only 4.2
pounds. The producer must also re-
member that sick birds produce
at a lower rate than healthy birds.
It is the poultryman’s responsi-
bility to provide the feed and en-
vironment that will allow the bird
to perform at the higheset level of
which it is capable, continues
Wormeli. One factor within the
poultryman’s control that needs
continuous attention is the reduc-
tion of feed wastage. It takes very
little waste Jo amount to 10 per-
cent, and this can mean 3 or 4
cents additional food coat* per
dozen eggs.
Wormeli says the poultryman
who uses a godo breed of layers
an d practices correct poultry hus-
bandry can , reasonably expect to
realize greater profits from his
operation.
