Teamplay brought first in district for Lady Panthers

Capturing the first disti ict title
for Aransas Pass High School in
girls basketball for decades, the
1991-92 Lady Panthers are a
blend of individuals combining
their talents on the court in a
game which demands team play.
Head Coach of the team, Ralph
Rice, said it was that team play
concept which made this year's
team go further than other teams
he has coached which had more
individual talent.
“They started to use their ta-
lent together as a team, that is
why they are district champs,"
said Rice.
He added another ingredient
could be found in the winning
formula.
“They like to play the game.
They love the game of basket-
ball,” said Rice.
While playing as a team, each of
the Lady Panthers has a role and
each brings their individuality
with them when the step on the
round ball court.
Sydney Wood.Probably the most
well known Lady Panther to play-
ers on opposing teams since she
has played on the varsity for four
years, Wood has faced defenses
designed to shut her down but
nothing can stop her influence on
her teapimates.
As a senior, she knows and
accepts her role as one of the
leaders of the team.
I try to keep the intensity level
up, and the team counts on me to
score,” said Wood.
And as many good players, she
also knows what weakness her
game has. “I need to improve my
defense,” she said.
She would also like to add a
consistent three point shot to her
offensive arsenal.
For Wood, Ingleside’s Shannon
Knueper is a nemesis among
opposing teams’ players and she
compliments Ingleside Coqch Pat
Hunt for how he prepares Kneup-
er to play her. Knueper held W'ood
to three points in the last Lady
Panther-Ldtly Mustang game.
But, following that game,
against Taft, Wood came back
and scored 31 points.
As a high achiever in other
sports, such as volleyball, W'ood
has had interest expressed in her
by colleges like Sam Houston
State, Texas University, Concor-
dia, the U.S. Coast Guard
Academy and other schools.
With a career interest in study-
ing accounting, and a desire to be
a teacher-coach someday, W'ood
would also like to have a college
athletic career.
“She has the drive needed. She
wants to excell,” said Coach Rice
of Wood.
Londne William,. There are a
few below it, but most basketball
players who are expected to play
under the basket are up there at
six feet-plua, at six feet even.
Lorainne Williams makes the
grade with her desire which adds
another four or five inches to her
height.
She is a consistent rebounding
leader, and when on target she
can rack up the points also.
“Sometimes my Shots fall, and
sometimes they don’t,” said Wil-
liams singing the refrain of all bas-
ketball players.
But if they don’t fall the first
time, and Williams can get near
the ball for a rebound, she will try
again as in the important Sinton
game when she went up three
times for the offensive rebound
until finally putting it in.
“Her offensive rebounding is
what has saved us in many a game
this season," said Coach Rice.
Whether or not her shots fall,
she can be counted on, to be there
trying for the rebound. And re-
bounding is not easy.
“I have trouble getting around
the defense. They block me out
and I have to fight for.jy*ition
under the basket,” said Williams.
Anytime you are in an area of
heavy traffic under the basket
you cain expect to get foul oalls.
However, Williams may get a little
too much attention from the offi-
cials.
“I think they call them more on
me because I’m taller and they
can see me,” Williams said diplo-
matically.
She will tell you, the Port Aran-
sas Tournament, where she was
named Most Valuable Player is
her fondest memory this season.
“We were down by four points
with four or five seconds left to
go, said Williams. “We needed a
three point shot and a foul to tie
the game. I threw up the shot for
the three pointer. I made it and
got fouled and made the foul
shot.”
Williams’ last second heroics,
algng with her 32 points in the
game, allowed to the Lady Panth-
ers to defeat Sinton and win first
place in the tournament.
Colleges have shown an in-
terest in recruiting Williams for
their athlectic programs and
most have been impressed by her
play off the boards.
Vanessa Price. As a point
guard, Price is expected to set up
the plays for the Lady Panthers
and she would not have it any
other way.
Playing point gaurd is the
easiest thing for me to do. I like to
be see the court and be in con-
trol,” said Price.
