Dana Suzanne Elder, to Jerry Lea Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs.

spring wedding. Miss Elder is a graduate of Incarnate Word

Pass High School, is one of 250
teachers nominated in 1991 for
the 10 Texas Excellence Awards
for Outstanding High School
Teachers given annually by The
Ex-Students’ Association of the
University of Texas.
Marek, a teacher for 29 years,
was nominated by the school’s
principal, Mike McGowan.
Recipients will be honored at a
ceremony and conference on the
university campus Feb. 19-21.
Each will receive a #1000 award,
a commemorative sculpture, and
a Macintosh Classic computer.
The award, co-sponsored by
the College of Education of UT
Austin, recognizes teachers who
make a special effort to prepare
their students for higher educa-
tion. It was established in 1986 to
promote public esteem for the
teaching profession in Texas.
The cash awards are funded by
the Ex-Students’ Association
Eyes of Texas annual giving prog-
ram, through which Texas Exes
provide academic support for the
university.

at Southwest Texas State University. Miss Figueroa achieved a

Fort Jackson, S.C. She was home in Aransas Pass on leave for
Christmas and reported to Ft. Leonard, Missouri and an Jan. 18

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class ROBERT S. GRAY, son of MR.
AND MRS. E.L. GRAY of Aransas Pass, recently participated in a
search and rescue mission aboard the tank landing ship USS
Tusealoosa, homeported in San Diego. Gray assisted in rescuing
12 survivors from the Mexican fishing boat, Paola, which was in
danger of sinking off the coast of Cabo San Lucas. The Paola crew
members were treated for exposure and were cared for by the
Tuscaloosa crew. Gray is a 1982 graduate of Aransas Pass High
School and joined the Navy in October 1983.
Obituaries
FLORES
Guadalupe M. Flores, 73, died
Sunday, Jan. 12, in a Corpus
Christi hospital.
Mrs. Flores was bom Oct. 29,
1918 in Piedras Negras, Mexico.
She was a long-time resident of
Aransas Pass and was a member
of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea
Catholic Church. She was pre-
ceded in death by her husband,
Esequel M. Flores, and two
daughters, Juanita and Juanita
Flores.
Survivors include five daugh-
ters, Inocensia Dawson of Win-
ton, California, Clara Hernandez
of Rockport, Julia Harris of Cor-
pus Christi, Maria Chapa and Aly-
sia Guajardo, both of Aransas
Pass; two sona, Hilario Flores of
Houston and Alfredo Flores of
Aransas Pass; 19 grandchildren;
and 23 great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.
Tuesday at the Charlie Marshall
Funeral Home chapel. Funeral
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
today at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea
Catholic Church. Burial will fol-
low in Aransas Memorial Park.
