Meteorological summer runs from June 1 through August 31. But
astronomical summer begins at the moment of the summer solstice.
This year that occurred before dawn Thursday morning. At noon that
day, the sun was directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer, about 23.5
degrees North. Dallas-Fort Worth is located about 32.5 degrees North,
or 9 degrees north of the Tropic. What that means is that even at the
solstice, the sun is never directly overhead in D-FW. Instead, it peaks at
81 degrees above the horizon.

Multiple car windows broken
in possible string of burglaries
No ticket matched all six num-

The jackpot was worth an
estimated $7.5 million. Wednesday
night’s jackpot will be worth an
estimated $7.75 million.

Three cars had their win-
dows broken during vehicle
burglaries in the same vicinity
from Thursday night to Friday
morning, according to Denton
police reports.
The burglaries occurred in
the 300 block of Thomas Street,
200 block of South Bonnie Brae
Street and 2000 block of West
Oak Street. The victims were
two 25-year-old women and
one 25-year-old man. A purse,
a French horn and a briefcase
were the items reported stolen.
Denton police spokesman
Bryan Cose said that because
the burglaries occurred near
each other, and during roughly
the same time frame, the inci-
dents could be connected.
“Until those investigations
are closed, we won’t know for
sure,” Cose said.
A fourth car, belonging to
a 27-year-old Denton woman,
was also broken into nearby,
but about 2 miles away from the
other incidents during a differ-
ent time of day — Friday about
1 p.m. — and nothing was re-
ported missing from the victim.
Cose offered some advice to
