Reading between the lines
The minutes from Federal
Reserve meetings can offer
insight into its officials’ policy
decisions.
The central bank is due to
release the minutes from last
month’s meeting tomorrow. At
that meeting, policymakers
raised the Fed’s benchmark
interest rate for the second time
this year, citing the resilient U.S.
economy. The panel also
signaled it might step up its
pace of rate increases.
Markets closed
The major U.S.
stock exchanges
will be closed
today for the
Independence
Day holiday.

Stock Exchange
and Nasdaq

scheduled to

Thursday.
Hiring survey
Investors will have their eye
tomorrow on a key gauge of the
U.S. job market’s health.
That’s when payroll processor
ADP is set to issue its latest
survey of hiring by private U.S.
companies. The May survey
showed companies added
178.000 jobs, a solid total, but
below the average monthly gains
accumulated over the winter.
Economists project that this
month’s survey will show a gain of
190.000 hires.

Artificial intelligence could give a productivity
boost to some of the 6,000 hulking ships that ferry
cargo containers around the world every day.
Although self-sailing ships are under develop-
ment, they won’t have much impact any time
soon. Instead, a new report by ABI Research
suggests that advances in
drones, robotics, automa-
tion, virtual reality and
other technologies could
fuel faster growth for
shipping companies.
Applying such technolo-
gies could help shippers
track costs more accurately
while addressing overca-
pacity and security issues.
Maritime freight remains
an unstable and fragment-
ed industry. But the report predicts that global
maritime freight revenue will grow to more than
$205 billion in 2023 from $166 billion last year.
Many shipping companies generate hundreds of
millions of data points from their ocean voyages
and cargo-handling, but few are currently
positioned to make use of it.
ABI Research principal
analyst Susan Beardslee
says long-standing industry
players must adapt and work
with Al technology leaders.
She says that’s already
happening; Finnish ship-en-
gine maker Wartsila, for
instance, recently acquired
British marine navigation firm
Transas, which is building
anti-collision software.
