DALLAS — A person with knowledge of the situa-
tion says the NFL is exploring options to get more
than $2 million in reimbursement for legal fees from
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over his threat to
derail Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract exten-
sion and his support of running back Ezekiel Elliott’s
fight to avoid a six-game suspension.
Many owners were consulted on seeking restitu-
tion, including members of the finance committee,
according to the person who spoke to The Associated
Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the
matter hasn’t been addressed publicly.
Some of the finance committee members are on
the compensation committee that was at the center of
what became a legal back-and-forth over Goodell’s
deal.

COMMENTARY
The Honda Classic broke its
attendance record last week with
a confirmed 224,624 spectators
over seven days. The tournament
attributed the record increase to
the return of Woods and the dra-
ma of a sudden-death playoff
won by Justin Thomas.
It could have stopped after
Woods. Not even Thomas would
argue with that
Television ratings for the
Honda Classic were up 43 per-
cent from the previous year, when
Rickie Fowler won.
No surprise there, either.
Woods no longer moves the
needle in golf. He is the needle.
Even when he finishes 12th.
What made Woods so com-
pelling at PGA National was that
he was only four shots behind go-
ing into the weekend, and that on
the toughest course of the season
— more than a full shot harder
than the next one—Woods never
shot worse than 7L
He still finished eight shots
behind and was never closer than
four shots of the lead over the
back nine. The possibilities were
there, just not the performance.
Not yet, anyway.
And perhaps that’s why cover-
age ofthe Honda Classic — video,
digital and print — touted results
by Woods that were impressive,
promising and everything in be-
tween, almost to a point that
Thomas winning in clutch style
was an afterthought.
Woods was pleased with how
he played, all things considered,
and there is a lot to consider —
three back surgeries in a span of
18 months, and not knowing five
months ago if he’d ever be able to
compete at a high level, and play-
ing against a full PGA Tour field
for only the third time this year.
But it’s early. He finished seven
shots behind in a tie for 23th at
Torrey Pines. He finished eight
shots behind in 12th place at PGA
National. In between, he missed
the cut at Riviera, a course that
never was kind to him, even at his
best Next up likely is Bay Hill,
where he has won eight times.
Different about Woods this
time is that he has lowered his ex-
pectations. He was playing to
win, sure. This time, he has ac-
cepted a newbody he had to learn
after fusion surgery on his lower
back, and that it might take time
to get back into the game. Three
starts in five weeks is the most
tournament golf he has played
since August 2015.
“My expectations have gone
up,” Woods said.
So will the hype. That proba-
bly won’t change until he wins.
Thomas, and no doubt others,
are fine with that Thomas is ap-
proaching $20 million in career
earnings, and even though he has
played in only 11 PGA Tour events
with Woods, he knows who to
thank for it.

Cavaliers ban fan who aimed
racial taunts at Spurs’ Mills
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio - The Cleveland Cava-
liers have indefinitely banned a fan from their arena
for making racial taunts at San Antonio’s Patty Mills.
Security ofiicials reviewed videotape from Sun-
day’s game and identified the fan sitting near the
court. He yelled at Mills while the Spurs guard was
shooting free throws in the fourth quarter.
The team did not disclose his name or any details
about him. He is barred from events at Quicken Loans
Arena, with the team to review the ban after one year.
While Mills was at the foul line, the fan was heard
on the ABC broadcast twice yelling, “Hey, Jamaica
called, they want their bobsledder back!” Mills is
black and from Australia with an Aboriginal heritage.

X-ray was negative.
Bergeron played in the Bruins’ 4-1 loss at Buffalo
on Sunday despite arriving at the arena wearing a

Lederation from 2011 through last year. It filed an an-
titrust suit against USSL in September after its status
was not renewed and asked for an injunction to pre-
serve it. A District Court denied the injunction in No-
vember, a decision upheld Lriday by a unanimous three-
judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
NASL Interim Commissioner Rishi Sehgal says in
a statement Tuesday “playing the 2018 season is no
longer a possibility” but it will press ahead with the
antitrust suit and hopes to resume play in 2019.
Three NASL teams, the Jacksonville Armada, Mi-
ami and the New York Cosmos, intend to play this
year in the National Premier Soccer League, which
has not been designated as part of the USSL soccer
pyramid.
