Strong finish?
A pickup in sales at established stores helped lift earnings
for Dollar General much of last year.
The discount retailer has been primarily focused on
shoppers seeking the absolute lowest prices, but is now
trying to attract middle-in-
come shoppers seeking
convenience and brands.
Did the strategy help the
company grow sales and
earnings again in its
fiscal fourth quarter?
Find out today, when
Dollar General reports its
latest quarterly snapshot.
Brimming with confidence
A strong job market and sizzling hot
economy has helped U.S. homebuild-
ers feel more optimistic about their
sales prospects this year.
The National Association of Home
Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market
Index hit 72 in February for the second
consecutive month. That was just 2
points shy of December’s reading,
which was an 18-year high for optimism
among the nation’s builders. Econo-
mists predict that the latest builder
index, due out today, will show that the
reading held steady this month.
Economic bellwether
A closely watched gauge of
manufacturing in New York is
due out today.
Economists project that this
month’s Empire State Manufac-
turing index rebounded to 15
from 13.1 in February. Readings
above zero show that factories
are expanding. The index, which
is issued by the Federal
Reserve Bank of New York, has
been steadily declining in recent
months, suggesting a slower
pace of growth.

U.S. stock indexes are experiencing a very
different path of recovery since the market
correction in early February.
The closely watched Dow Jones industrial
average is proving the slowest to bounce back, up
only 4 percent since the dip. The S&P 500, the
most widely held of the major
indexes, has followed, gaining
about 7 percent. And it’s the
Nasdaq composite, the
tech-heavy wildcard of the
bunch, that has done the best:
up 11 percent and already
hitting record highs again.
The divergent paths
highlight the underlying
differences in the indexes.
The Nasdaq benefits from a tech-heavy portfolio,
where stocks have done well. The S&P represents a
more balanced mix, and a group of Morgan Stanley
analysts even said they see it approaching 3,000 by
midyear before fading in the second half of 2018.
The Dow, on the other hand, has
suffered because of its greater
exposure to industrial companies,
which have been unsettled by the
aluminum and steel tariffs President
Trump recently announced.
By design, the markets will
never perform equally, but only
time will tell if they will start to
pace more evenly.
