OXNARD, Calif. — Kris Richard
wears cleats to practice just in case
the new secondary coach of the Dallas
Cowboys decides to jump in on a play,
which he did in training camp.
The former defensive coordinator for
the Legion of Boom in Seattle was the
highest-ranking hire in an overhaul of
Jason Garrett’s staff after the Cowboys
missed the playoffs for the fifth time in
seven full seasons under their coach.
The fiery Richard (pronounced ruh-
SHARD) takes over a group that has
one thing in common with the crew he
had in his early days with the Seahawks:
youth. For now, it’s a stretch to say there’s

or Kam Chancellor on the Dallas roster.
“There’s really no need to even talk
about that,” said Richard, also given
the title of passing game coordinator.
“We’re not trying to be them. We’re try-
ing to be us. If we want to have success,
then this has been the formula that has
been successful in the past. If we want
to do right, if want to have a great im-
pact, then this is the style of the play we
need to use.”

After going 6-2 at the North-
west ISD Classic over the week-
end, Guyer entered Tuesday
night’s rival game against Ryan
with a lot of momentum on its
side.
Krum coach Lynn
Larson came into Tuesday night
praising her team for its fast start
to the season. She finished the night
wondering how it was possible to
rack up so many errors in four sets.

The Lady Bobcats, ranked No. 5
in the Texas Girls Coaches Associa-
tion Class 4A poll, had 34 hitting er-
rors and 13 service errors in a 25-16,
16-25, 24-26, 21-25 loss to Brock,
ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. Krum
(13-2) played without Reese Robin-
son and Siara Smith and lost three
straight sets after rolling through
the opening frame.
We just didn’t play well at all,”
Larson said. “There wasn’t a single
point in the game where I felt like
we did well.”
Brock (14-4) didn’t have a lead
throughout the entire first set as the
combo of Payton Lucas and Paige
Orsi got Krum off to a fast start that
included a 9-4 run to close the set.
But the Lady Eagles proceeded to
pounce on a suddenly inept Krum
attack for the rest of the night. Brock
led 22-11 at one point in the second
set, and after pulling out a tight win
in the third, rallied from five points
down with a 12-3 run to win the
match.
Of those final 12 points, 10 came
off Krum errors — including eight in
a row.
The Lady Wildcats used that
momentum to spark a dominat-
ing 25-9 win in the first set before
coasting to a sweep with a 25-14
win in Set 2 and a 25-16 win in
Set 3.

“Coming off the tournament
and how well they played this
weekend in those fast games, we
had to make a big of an adjust-
ment,” Guyer coach Heather Van
Noy said. “But they played well.
We capitalized on some of Ryan’s
errors and I had an opportunity
to play some people in different
positions, which is always nice.”
With senior Shea Slusser out
for the season with a broken wrist
and sophomore Brooke Slusser
resting due to a knee injury, the
Lady Wildcats had to make some
changes offensively as Simone
Broderson and Bailey Samide
split most of the game at setter
and combined for 33 assists.
Rachel Tullos (six kills, three
blocks) and Jordyn Williams
(three kills, two blocks) helped
Guyer get off to a strong start
before Van Noy rested the duo,
along with a few of her other
starters, down the stretch. Fresh-
man Maggie Walsh stepped up to
lead the way offensively, finishing
with eight kills.
“Maggie plays so many roles
for us,” Van Noy said. “She’s a
freshman but doesn’t play like
one. She works hard in practice,
but in the game her mentality
completely shifts. That’s why she

Kealey Dent added 28 digs while the
combo of Laney Dale and Bryland

Krum got 15 kills from Lucas and
13 kills from Tori Hamilton. Orsi
added six kills. As a team, though,
Krum finished with a dismal .085
hitting percentage. The Lady Bob-
cats’ best chance to climb back into
the match came in the third set.

Lady Broncos find rhythm to beat Parish
Sanger wins hard-fought
battle against Lake Dallas
we haven’t seen this year, so it’s just
about learning from it.”
While the defense on Cooper stalled
Parish’s offense, Denton’s offense found
a groove in the second and third sets.
Sophomore middle blocker Leah Stolf-
is led the Lady Broncos in kills with 15,
and not far behind her was Soto, who
totaled 12 kills along with 10 digs. The
offense was conducted by sophomore
setter Taylor Thomas, who finished the
match with 14 assists and 13 digs in
their first home match of the year.
“It was a good first home win for
us,” Headrick said. “Honestly, we didn’t
know a whole lot about them, but [Coo-
per] was by far the best hitter we’ve
played this year. We learned a lot from
that match, and right now we’re trying
to take something away from every sin-
gle match we go into.”

The first home match of the year for
the Lady Broncos came with a lot of un-
knowns. For one, Denton head coach
Cassie Headrick and her staff did not
have much scouting on opponent Dal-
las Parish Episcopal, and two, there was
some uncertainty and hesitation about
playing in front of their home crowd.
This all helped Parish jump out on
the Lady Broncos in the first set, even-
tually holding set point at 24-20. But
a comeback ensued, and the Broncos,
with their fans’ support, rallied win the
first set 26-24. From there, Denton got
more comfortable, going on to sweep
Parish 26-24, 25-20, 25-23 and im-
proving to 15-3 on the season.
“In the first set, we played really
timid,” junior outside hitter Sydney

Soto said. “It was our first home game
and we saw them warming up and we
thought they were really good. After the
first set, we gained the confidence and
started believing in ourselves.”
The star for Parish was senior
Reagan Cooper, who stands at about
6-foot-l and was tormenting Denton’s
blocks, especially in the first set.
Headrick and her team made
changes, though, and were able to deter
Cooper from getting loose, letting the
Lady Broncos dictate more points.
“We tried to serve at her when she
was in the front row to slow her down
and then tried to get the ball away from
her so it wasn’t an easy attack,” Head-
rick said. “The angle at which she hits,
