Yoakum Community Hospital
From the desk of Keith Kutae. Director of Diagnostic
Services
Prenatal ultrasound (also called fetal ultrasound or fetal
sonography) has become an almost automatic part of the child-
birth process. It is estimated that up to 70% of women in the United
States have prenatal ultrasound exams during pregnancy and to
check the development of the fetus.
The tremendous feelings a mother has for her child growing
inside her womb are impossible to describe. The experience is dif-
ferent, yet wonderful, for every mother. 1 he sensation many moth-
ers and fathers feel when they first glimpse live ultrasound images
of their fetal babies brings a fascinating reality and a new dimen-
sion to the parental experience of pregnancy and childbirth.
Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound is a recent advancement that
can produce 3D images of the fetus that are as detailed as a photo-
graph. This type of imaging may be use during targeted (also called
level II) exams when physicians are examining a particular fetal
abnormality. Although not in widespread use, this new advance-
ment is now available at Yoakum Community Hospital.
For more information about this new machine or any other ra-
diological concerns, feel free to call the diagnostic department at
(361) 293- 2321, ext. 326. Also, be watching for a Valentines Day
"Heartfelt Health Day" where our newest 4D sonography machine
will be showcased. For more information about this event contact
the Pilot's Club.
