Strong finish?
Wall Street expects Big Lots’
latest quarterly snapshot report
card will show improvement
from a year earlier.
Financial analysts predict the
retail chain will report that its
earnings and revenue
increased in its fiscal fourth
quarter. That would be in line
with the company’s results in
the previous two quarters.
Investors will be listening for an
update on how sales trends are
shaping up for 2018.
Manufacturing bellwether
The Commerce Department
releases today its tally of Jan-
uary’s wholesale business
stockpiles.
Economists project stock-
piles at the wholesale level
increased 0.7 percent last
month. They rose by 0.6 per-
cent in December, matching
November’s gain. When busi-
nesses order more goods, it
generally leads to more facto-
ry production and that boosts
economic growth.
Eye on jobs
Recent trends in hiring and wage
growth suggest U.S. employers are
competing more fiercely for workers.
Wages rose at the fastest pace
in more than eight years in Janu-
ary, while employers added a
robust 200,000 jobs. Raises stem-
ming from Republican tax cuts and
minimum wage increases also
likely boosted pay. Did the trends
continue last month? Find out
today, when the Labor Department
reports its jobs and wages data for
February.

Happy ninth birthday, second longest U.S. bull
market since World War II.
The stock market’s near decade-long climb
upward since the depths of the Great Recession
turns nine years old Friday. On
March 9, 2009, the Standard &
Poor hit a cycle low of 676.53,
and now is up more than 300
percent since that date,
according to Howard
Silverblatt at S&P Global.
The stock market has had
several corrections since
March 9, 2009, which is when
an index like the S&P 500 falls
10 percent or more from a recent high, most
recently in February. But the stock market has not
fallen 20 percent or more from a recent high,
which is when a bull market becomes a “bear”
market. At its current level,
the S&P 500 would have to
fall roughly 600 points in
order to enter a bear market.
If the current bull market
lasts until August 21, it will be
the longest bull market in
U.S. since World War II,
exceeding the bull market
that started October 1990
and lasted until March 2000.
