Philip Morris International releases
its latest quarterly report card
today.
Wall Street predicts the maker
of Marlboro and other cigarette
brands will report that its earnings
and revenue improved in the
second quarter versus a year
earlier. Investors will be listening
for management comments on
a push earlier this year by U.S.
federal health officials to slash
levels of addictive nicotine in
cigarettes.
Winning streak
Strong sales of workplace soft- $120
ware and other cloud services
have helped boost Microsoft’s
earnings this year.
The trend was a big reason
why the software giant posted
three consecutive quarters with
improved earnings heading into
the April-June quarter. Finan-
cial analysts predict Microsoft
will report today that its fiscal
fourth-quarter earnings and
revenue increased from a year
earlier.
Economic bellwether
A measure of the U.S. econo-
my’s future health is expected to
have improved last month.
Economists project the
Conference Board will report
today that its index of leading
indicators rose 0.4 percent in
June after posting a 0.2 percent
gain a month earlier. The index,
derived from data that for the
most part have already been
reported individually, is designed
to anticipate economic conditions
three to six months out.

Personal computer sales are finally swinging slightly
upward after a six-year slump, though it could be a
temporary blip driven by businesses replacing their
outdated machines.
Corporate demand fueled a 1.4 percent
second-quarter increase in
worldwide PC shipments
compared to the previous year,
according to the research firm
Gartner Inc. The gain registered
for the April-June period marks
the first year-over-year quarterly
increase in PC sales recorded
by Gartner since the opening
months of 2012.
Although it wasn’t much, the
upturn nevertheless provided a
rare bit of good news for an industry that has been
smacked around by the shift to smartphones and
tablets, which now handle many of the tasks that used
to require PCs.
The main beneficiaries from the industry’s return to
_ _ growth are Microsoft, the maker of
| the Windows operating system
powering most PCs, and five
companies that sold three out of
every four PCs during the second
quarter — Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple
and Acer.
Among that group, Apple is far
more interested in smartphones than
PCs. The iPhone generates nearly
six times more revenue than the
Mac does.
