How are consumers feeling?
Investors will get the June read-
ing of the University of Michigan
Consumer Sentiment Index
today.
The Michigan survey mea-
sures how U.S. consumers are
feeling about the economy and
their willingness to spend money.
With consumer spending making
up roughly 70 percent of the U.S.
economy, dips in consumer senti-
ment can have real impacts on
how much companies will sell
during a particular time period.
New York state of mind
The Empire State Index
measures economic activity in
New York State, the nation’s
third-largest state economy after
California and Texas. It’s one of a
handful of regional or state
economy surveys that investors
use to predict broader economic
indicators like the monthly jobs
report or quarterly gross domestic
product.
The Empire State Index was
20.1 in May and is expected to be
down to a reading of 18.3 in June.
Factoiy activity
The Federal Reserve releases
industrial production figures for
May today.
The Fed measures the total
output of factories, mines and
utility companies each month
to get a read on how well
U.S. industry is performing.
Investors focus mostly on
the factory output part of the
data, since mining can be
volatile and utility companies
tend to be more impacted by
seasonality.

Twitter earned $61 million, or 8 cents per share. A
year earlier the San Francisco company lost
$61.6 million, or 9 cents per share. Analysts
forecast another profit in the current quarter, and
FactSet says they expect 16 cents per share on
average. Twitter is due to
report second-quarter
results on July 27.
Twitter shares plunged
after the company issued
disappointing forecasts in
April 2015. Things began
turning around in April
2017, when Twitter
reported a fourth consecu-
tive quarter of accelerating
daily usage. The shares
closed up 6.1 percent at
$46.76 on Thursday.
Thursday’s close: $46.76 -
Twitter rose last week when the social media
company’s stock was added to the S&P 500
index. But that was nothing new: long a stock
investors avoided, Twitter has tripled in value in a
little more than a year.
Twitter turned a profit
for the first time in its
history in the fourth
quarter, and it remained
profitable last quarter.
While Twitter still counts
far fewer users than
Facebook, efforts to make
its service more user
friendly, like doubling the
maximum length of
tweets, have helped lift
the stock.
In the first quarter
