Scouts visit 'Blue Goast'
By Dare Weibp
A part of American Naval history
was relived over the Thanksgiving
holidays by Boy Scout Troup 301
of Llano. Troop members became
part of the "Live" On Board" pro-
gram aboard the U.S.S. Lexington
Aircraft Cturier, stationed at Corpus
Christi. "Live On Board" is a pro-
gram available to the Boy Scouts of
American through the Lexington
Museum that allows scouts a
chance to learn about life on board
the carrier. 4
Upon arrival on the dock, the
boys were treated to a "special" ori-
entation session on safety and con-
duct on board ship by a former drill
instructor, before boarding the car-
rier and slowing their gear in
* berthing compartments below deck.
Over the next 24 hours, the group
was treated to mess hall chow,
| static displays of aircraft, and a
complete tour of the carrier decks:,
from engine,room, captain's bridge,
hospital, C.I.C., to the flight deck,
the boys learned about "The Blue
Ghost's" storied past.
Commissioned in 1942, CV-16
was the second carrier to be mon-
ickered Lexington. She was rushed
into service with only a grey primer
coat of paint as the Japanese had
sunk the original "Lady Lex" during
the Battle of Coral Sea. How odd
the new carrier must have looked to
the rest of the fleet as"most of the
Navy's big ships were a dark blue
color.
Lexington's grey color scheme
would ultimately become the stan-
dard paint color for the Navy
throughout the remainder of World
War II and today as her legend grew
from Japanese pilots.
As bombs exploded in the water
around Lexington during air attacks,
the giant grey ship seemingly dis-
appeared into the ocean spray.
Tokyo Rose even nicknamed the
new Lexington, "The Ghost Ship"
as on four different occasions at-
tacking Japanese pilots falsely
claimed to have sunk her; only to
have the carrier reappear in the next
battle and avenge her namesake.
Lexington would forever be labeled
"The Blue Ghost” to her crew.
From her decks. The Blue Ghost
air groups were credited with 372
aircraft destroyed in the air and an-
other 475 on the ground. She sank
300,000 tons of shipping and dam-
aged nearly 600,000 tons more. No
other ship claimed more victories
during World War II. The great car-
rier even survived a direct Kamikaze
hit on the port side that killed or
wounded 173 American sailors.
After the war, Lexington re-

gled deck for jet carriers operation

flict
.Ten years later, Lexington be-
came the Navy's Training Carrier.
Nearly every Navy or Marine pilot
flying with the fleet today has
qualified from' her decks. The
U.S.S. Lexington logged over
329,000 arrested carrier landings.
No other carrier will ever match her
records. ■
Today, as the U.S.S. Lexington
rests permanently moored in Cor-
pus ChriSti Bay, visitors comb her
decks to catch a glimpse of history.'
sooner or later they ill stop in the
hangar deck to reflect and admire the
Kill Board and Service Record of
the legendary carrier. There, nestled
in the middle, is a walnut board. On
it are the ..numbers 301, Capital

played outdoor decorations and
lights during the Christmas season.

themes, sizes, and colors and added
a lot to our community. ^ big

put up decorations and lights.
Bobbie and Bill Simmons trav-
eled to Port Charlotte, Florida, for a
two week Christmas^ visit with
their son, Paul Simmons. High-
lights during this visit included
tours of the homes of Thomas Edi-
son and Henry Ford at Fort Myers.
Edison and Ford were very close
friends and had homes next to each
other. According id their lour guide,
Henry Ford never returned to his
Fort Myers home after the death of
Thomas Edison. Also, they visited
the Edison and Ford museums.
