the Texas state prison, says
he believes his father was kill-

reported* as telling a Houston
Press writer..
At the same time, another
Press writer repotted there were
‘‘strange physical circumstances"
surrounding Smithwick's death
in a prison cell in Huntsville on
April 15.
The younger Smithwick said
he had visited his father soot^jp
ter the Older man had written to
Coke Stevenson, defeated candi-
date in the hotly disputed 1941!
.Senatorial election.
His father was in'good spirits
‘‘and said he would be getting
out of the penitentiary soon.”
Three weeks later, the deputy's
body was found hanged by a pris-
on towel which had been tied to
the edge of a low bunk.
Sam Smithwick was sent to
prison for the cold-blooded mur
