break in Mexico of hoof and
mouth disease, or “aftosa."
A joint, commission of top U. S.
and Mexican veterinarians has
concentrated on a vaccination
program against the disease.
Since the first case of aftosa were
reported in Mexico in December,
1946, the U. S. and Mexican gov-
ernments have spent more than
$160 million in the program.
Hoof and mouth infections have
been stamped out before by quar-
antine and absolute slaughter us-
ing the “sanitary rifle,” a method
highly unpopular with Mexican
peasants and farmers.
Under the commission’s gui-
dance, most of Mexico’s cattle,
sheep, goats and swine were ln-
noculated four times. Livestock
experts estimated that more than
70 million animals received the
shots against the virus.
Inspections were mad eof all
herds. The commission said that
four rounds of vaccinations held
on a four-month basis gave non-
infected animals 16 months of
immunity .— ample time for the
virus to die a natural death.-
The progra mmarked a com-
pletely new approach to aftosa,
which has killed off an estimat-
ed one million cattle in Mexico
since the first outbreak fn 19^46.
Mexico, wtih its big aftosa
campaign over, now maintains a
small stafLof inspectors and lab-
oratory technicians.
