The Comanche Chief / Thursday, December 11,2008, Page 5A
By Margaret Waring
I f forced to name our best
treat this week, we give up
now. One arrived on Sat-
urday afternoon when we
showed up at Comanche’s
Museum to join many Co-
manche friends and share a
great program. All had come
to honor Loci Dene Cox, well
known Comanehean, and
listen to his excellent talk as
a survivor of the tragic loss
of the U.S.S. Indianapolis on
July 30, 1945.
The most casual observ-
er could see that dedicated
museum volunteers had
spent many hours preparing
exhibits in all their diver-
sity. Included were excellent
graphics, pictures and ban-
ners that had been hung, and
there was a very substantial
display case crowded with
different smaller items.
Perhaps the best part from
my personal view was Loel
Dene’s simple presentation,
without notes, as he just
shared his thoughts, experi-
ence and knowledge almost
as a conversation. Questions
from the attentive audience
were answered well. The li-
brary wishes to particularly
express appreciation for a
copy of Only 317 Survived
which Loel Dene presented
to go with other Indianapo-
lis titles collected long ago.
And Left for Dead is a new
title, based on a quest begun
as Hunter Scott’s high school
history project, and designed
to exonerate the Indianapo-
lis’ captain found guilty of
“hazarding his ship” by a
military tribunal. Here is
fresh information worthy of
pursuit.
Another treat came on
Sunday afternoon as we
joined friends of all ages at
the dedication ceremonies
for Comanche’s new Middle
School building. With our
abiding interest in the stu-
dents, the progress we have
observed along the way, and
a long standing respect for
the teachers and administra-
tors, we were surely glad to
be standing on a front row.
We toured the building too
quickly but saw enough of
the handsome new library
space to be deeply envious
over all their empty shelves.
We will say more about
Live Homework Help. Us-
ers are showing up, calling
for details, and exhibiting
interest that pleases us. By
library rules, those age 12
and younger must be ac-
companied by a parent to
use the computers. We have
arranged what we hope is an
easy solution. We will keep
a log of Homework Help us-
ers disregarding age, per-
mit them to sign up, and get
on with homework chores.
Service at the library is be-
tween 3:00 p.m. and library
closing. It is 3:00 p.m. until
10:00 p.m. if you are work-
ing at home or elsewhere.
We hope this is easy and
practical for everyone.
Lots of new titles con-
tinue to arrive in the form of
best sellers and western fic-
tion and new series fantasy
titles for older youngsters.
We’ve really neglected new
arrivals and we are sorry.
Come and look for yourself.
You’re missing goodies all
around.
