from the publishing company the
whole department of Da Vendee, but
he was only given a suburban Parisian
aroiidissemeut; nevertheless his prow-

martial pol tics of a continent, and lie

visited the French section at the cen-

canvasser’s outfit of the gpftat emper-

which his assiduity secured. On the
blank pages in the end of the soiled
and failed prospectus, in the well
known and scaree legible chirography
of the Corsican captain, are h s own
pmitit personal notes, such as 'Tuycz.

of our day, would mean ‘good as

“No less a personage than George
Washington, while surveyor of Fair-
tax county, in li s youth, prior to the
Piti ful Hruddock expedition, was tem-
porarily a book agent, and a good one.

which is now among the relies ot the
patent office, was one well titled to the
taste of the prisoners, being Hoydcdl's

colonial times. Washington sold over
two hundred copies in and around
Alexandria, Va., and to the rich tobac-
co planters of Acquia creek, which
was a remarkable success for so early
a day in the trade. Dossing, the most
reliable of our Revolutionary histor-
ians. avers, after close investigation,
that in disposing of liis large number
of books \N nshington never permitted
himself to trespass beyond the rigid
line of truth in extolling the merits of
his prospectus.
“So I nil "lit mention many others
who got their lirsL start in life as book
agents, i’o come down to our own
times, thoro is day Gould, now rich
beyond the dreams of avarice, who was
in early life a b »ok canvasser: so was
Mark Twain. Ralph Waldo Kmerson,
before espousing the transcendental
philosopy, and establishing the Cou-
cord school, canvassed books for a
Boston house. also did Donfollow,
w boss success was phenomenal, his
pleasing address and sweet manners
no doubt giving him many a hearing.
Rev. S. .1. Dongfellow, the poet’s
brother, discovered among his effects
after death a small prospectus the
pool had used. The book passed into
the possession of the late bam Ward,
the life-long friend of Dongfellow, and
was by him bequeathed to the Massa-
chusetts Historical society. In its
froutispiece page are the skele-
ton lino* of tho now celebrated poem
‘Excelsior,’ which the poet was then
evidently incubating, and which were
singularly applicable to his then voca-
tion of agent, as they were later on to
his fame as the poet of the people.
Daniel Webster paid his second-terru
tuition at Dartmouth by acting as lo
cal agent in Merrimao county. New
Hampshire, for a Litchfield (Conn.) firm
to sell De Toeqiieville’s ‘American,’
then having a great run in cultured
New England towns. Bert Harto was
u book agent in (he fall of '49 or the
spr;ng ofViO in California, and worked
a richer placer by reason of Ins apti-
tude among the sturdy, rough-hewn
Argonauts of that boisier ous period.
Hen. Grant, subsequent to his resigna-
tion from tho army and before his ven-
ture on the rugged Dent farm, on tho
old Gravois road, took pari of the ter-
ritory of a general agent of I'utnani to
dispone of lriving’s ‘Columbus.’ Al-
though only engaged in the busine-s
for a short time, be is on record w tli
the eastern house as a tine canvasser.
Ins quiet, subdued, and uuobtrusive
manners no doubt aiding him much
in attaining hi* reputation. Ex Presi-
dent. Haves footed it all over southern
Ohio when a mere lad getting sub-
scriptions for ‘Baxter's Lives of the
Saints,' and was fairly successful, his
pious demeanor and temperarteo hab-
its helping him to win support among
tho yoemanry. and lie usually obtain-
ed at least eight out of every fifteen of
the commissions ho undertook.
“Blaine, tho magnetic and popular
politician, began life as an humble
canvasser in Washington county, in
this state, sell tig a 'Life of Henry
Clay, the Mill-Boy of the Slashes.’ In
this undertaking the white plumed
was just ns magnetic and persuasive
as later on iu politics. It is related of
him to this day by one of the out wool “Hla life has been a success, I bis

“It is not authenticated whether
Gladstiyie ever personally canvassed
or not, all hough it is very well know n
that while a( Cambridge he agreed to
take a few orders lor some polemical
works, both tor the Murrays of Lon-
don and the Constables of Edinburg.
No I might extend the list—if I fell I
was not encroaching on }our time a
little—of men and women who have
out a wide swath in the world’s field
of fume who in early life figured as
book agents. Mine, de Slaol and Mi*m.
Jameson among women, Curdiual
Mc/z >fanti. Count Metteruich, Can-
ning, Lord Denham—who came so
near the woolsack and Coleridge, the
poet. Columbus canvassed fora work
on marine exploration, ‘Espertnza-
dcllu Marina Novella,’ in Genoa be-
fore going to the court of Isabella
to solicit the greatest order ever
secured and given new world to man-
kind.
“I trust wu shall hear no more of
this ridicule which is so constantly
finding its way into the pms about
our profession. As an avenue to suc-
cess young men *hould bn ied into it.
It is a business which was not thought
too lowly to engage the attention of
tiio-e who figured as the meekest, the
worthiest, and greatest of mankind. I
regret very much that the scheme
proposed some lime ago by one of our
i’hiladelpliia bankers to distribute the
surplus revenue of the nation did not
receive more general attention. It is
a question worthy to nrrest our atten-
tion whether it. would not be wise to
appropriate a certain portion of
suite lurid derived in that wav for the
endowment of a school where the can-
vasser or book agent could be trained
to go through a regular course lo ma-
triculation. ’
The Popular Tendency is Toward
Cremation.
It sometimes happens, when a body
is to bo removed from one cemetery to
another, that the coffin is opened, and
a thrill ot horror passes through all
j wno listen when the beholders tell the
I story of the corpse turned upon its
i face in the casket, while the torn
| hands, lacerated face and disarranged
clothing speak of the awful tragedy
that took place six feet under ground,
when the buried man revived and
found himswlf entombed alive. There
are more of these occurrences than
the world is apt to suppose; but
there was but one in a hundred years,
that one would be nn unanswerable
argument in favor of cremation. The
idea is evidently growing in this coun-
try, as shown by the opening of an-
other crematory. this time at Mount
Olivet, on Long Island; and if all the
arguments pro and con are taken into
account, there seems good reason why
I cremator! should continue to grow in
I public favor. As the country becomes
j more thickly settled, the population
! of the graveyards will also increase,
i and these homes of the dead wil
! daily become sources of greater dan
ger to the living. Tho researches o
medical science have shown that cpi
cTclilies are sometimes tra cable to tlit*
contagion arising from old grave-
yards, wh lo the drainage from ceme-
teries has been known to contaminate
whole districts with its poison. All
these facts being well known, and
oriiv tically undisputed, there remains
iu favor of burial only a sentimental
feeling, powerful, indeed, and wor-
thy of res| cot, if for no other reason,
ou account of those who entertain it,
but resting on no solid louudation,
and destined to no long survival. The
popular tendency is toward cream-
lion, ami it will not be many years be-
fore the sentimental opposition to it
will die away. — »SD houm (ilobe-Demo-

The proprietor of thia celebrated medicine

jf Ague and Fever,or Chills and Fever,wbeth-
ir of short o? long standing. He rofera to tht
intire Western and Southern country to bear
Mm testimony to the truth of the anertion
that in no oa»e whatever will it fail to cure if
thodireotioniare strictly fnllowedandoarried
jut'. In a great many oases a sing'e doge ha*
been sufficient for a cure, and whole families
have been cured bv a single bottlo with i >r-
feot restoration or the general 1 .th. . is,
however, prudent, and in every case i tore cer-
tain to cure, if its uso is continued in smaller
doses for a woek or two aftor t'uo disease has
been oheolred. more eipeoially in difficult and
long-standing oases. Usuully this medicine
will not require any aid to kocp the bowels in
jood order. Should the patient, however, re-
quire a cathartio medicine, aftor having taken
three or four dosos of the Tonic, a single dose
jf KENT’S VEGETABLE FAMILY PILLS
will be sufficient. Use no other.
