ly the death knell of Home Rule.
It is not only men who partici-
pate in these riots and horrible
butchery, but boys, and—women.
The latter are said to have be-
haved like perfect demons.
It is a terrible stale of affairs to
think that in this nineteenth cen-
tury iwen and women living in a
civilized country could be guilty
of the foul, murderous work that
has bqen enacted the past week
or two in the city of Belfast. It
was not a factional fight of an
hour or two or for one day. It
lasted ffor days.*' Passions were
inflamed more and more as each
‘day rolled by, and with the break
of day each morning the bloody
work of the day previous would
be resumed with still more bit-
terness. Just when the oppress

the brightest mlfiUects the world
has ever produced have met their
fate upon tlve scaffold or lingered
for life in foul and dismal dun-

Emerald Isle. It may be said
that religious excitement produc

— The Democratic State conven-
tion, which met at Galveston last
week, was composed of 723 dele-
gates, it is said to have been the
finest body of men that ever as-
sembled in the Stjhe. Admitting
this point, the ticket nominated
is unimpeachable evidence of the
fact that, fine looks was not the
only quality possessed by the con-
vention. The men selected as
the standard bearers of Democra-
cy in the coming campaign is un-
deniable proof that flue judgment
was another commendable quali-
ty possessessed by the couven
tion. It is not a ticket of a clique
or a section, but is a representa-
tive Democratic ticket, one that
represents every section and ev
ery interest of the great Demo-
cratic State of Texas; a ticket
that every Democrat in the State
can support with enthusiasm.

Mr. W. D. Hawkins left Tues-

Mr. Croome, of Brown county,

Several of us went to Ft. Ske-
daddle 14 miles from this place

the benefit of this community.
We found water at a depth of 4

war with Mexico.
Col. Jones is putting up his

gets among the farmers there,
you will hear something interest-

When a man gets left in a con-
vention, w.l.ether by fair or foul
means, it is very xofiducive to his
future success political to quietly
submit and support his successful
competitor.
The prohibitionists are not sat-
isfied with the result of the con-
vention ; but we hardly think
they will ally themselves with
the republicans and aid in defeat
ing the democratic ticket.
We publish this week the plat-
forms of the democratic party and
the State Alliance. Can any one
tell from the reading of them
which is the political one, and
which is non-political?
Editor Cutting may be a worthy
man but lie lias evidently utinec-
essarily brought his present trou
bles upon -himsetfr* And if he
has acted so imprudently that the
United States cannot afford to
protect him, it is his fault solely,
and he should not complain.
Galveston was so crowded dur-
ing the Drill and the Convention
that but poor accommodations
could be secured unless previous
arrangements had been made for
lodgiugs. Only one of the Van
Zandt delegation had been provi-
dent enoqgli to do that and he
left his directions at home.
Many seemed disposed to criti-
cise harshly* the administration
for its apparent dilatoriness in
the Mexican troubles; but Such
should remember that diplomatic
negotiations are necessarily slow
and tedious. The government by
the prudence displayed in this
matter shows its trustworthiness
in a great crisis, A declaration
of war is of too much moment to
be gone into without a thorough
investigation of the grounds of
the same and the justness of the
cause.
FARMERS.
The merchants and business
men of Wills Point are making
ample preparations to control all
the trade of this and adjoining
counties. They expect, to com
pete with neighboring towns is
prices and it will be greatly t«
your interest to give them your
custom. Every man is interested
in building up his own county
and ought never to take any trade
away from it. Good home mar-
kets is the farmers’ best friend,
and these can be had only by pat-
ronizing your own county towns.
The more business centered at
one place the better are the mer
chants enabled to give good bar
gains and therefore let all the
trade that legitimately belongs
to the town be brought here.
Talmage says if the people of
this nation, or any other nation,
could only understand what an
archvis they would crush out its
life instantaneously. “Anarchy
is abolition of the right of proper-
ty. It makes your store and your
house and your mouev and fami-
ly mfhe, and mine yoursj It is
wholesale robbery. It is every
man’s hand against every other
man. It is arson and lust and
death triumphant. -It means no
law, no church, no defense, -no
rights, no happiness, no God. It
means boll let loose on earth, and
society a combination of deYtls
incarnate. It means extermina
tion of everything goo.d.aAd the
creation of everything infamous.”
Democratic Trinity. ,
Secretary Lamar on Mr. Tilden.
He was not onlv a great man in
the common sense of the phrase,
but he was a composite man. Our
history has at least- three states-
men whose most conspicuous
qualities he duplicated in him
self. He had the political sagac
ity and power to manage men
which Jefferson possessed; then
he had the scholarly breadth and
philosophic culture of Madison in
dealing with foundation princi-
ples, and the unbending will and
stern integrity of Jackson. Jack-
son, Madison and Jefferson—they
were often recalled to me by the
career of Tilden during his most
commanding and active years.
