Montoomeky, Ala., Aug. 16.—The
following resolutions, st a largely
Attended eitixen’s meeting, unani-
mously adopted, speak for them-
selves. They are the sentiments of
the community who will make it hot
for Duke, now absent, should lie ever
return here where excitement runs
high:
Whereas, The Montgomery Herald,
a weekly paper published in tills city
by a negro named Jessie Duke, in its
issue of Saturday, Aug. lit, used the
following language: “Every day or
su we read of thu lynching of some
negro for the outraging of sonic white
•roman. Why is it that white women
attract negro men more now than in
former dHyi? There was a time when
such a thing whs never heard of.
There is a secret to this thing, and
we greatly suspect it is tho growing
appreciation of the white Juliet for
the colored Romeo ns iie becomes
more and more intelligent and refin-
ed. If something is not done to
break up these lyncliii gs it will lie
so after uwliile that they lynch eveiy
colored man that looks at a white
woman with a twinkle in her eye.”
Resolved, That the above does not
call for an apology on his part, or h
promise not to repeat, blit stamps him
as a scoundrel, who lias crossed the
limit of toleration in this community;
that he cannot live in Montgomery
or Montgomery county, and is here-
by warned to keep uway or take the
consequences.
Reunited, That we, the white peo-
ple of Montgomery, pronounce tins as
an insult, to which we will not sub-
mit.
Resolved, That the editor, Jessie
Duke, is a vile and dangerous charac-
ter, who seems bent on inculcating
doctrines among his race that are a
menance to society mid to every
white woman in the land.
Resolved, That the owners of the
Herald are warned not to allow sucli
language to appear in its columns a-
gain.
A committee was looking for Duke
on all in und outgoing trains to-night
but he was non est.
