Tuesday night, May 15th ac-
cording to previous announce-
ment Prof. Rhodes was to have
delivered a Union Labor speech
to tho citizens of this community.
The tune arrived but the gentle-
man failed to put in an appear-
ance. Of course ho was providen-
tially hindered.
Democratic speakers had been
invited to meet the announced
orator of the occasion to discuss
the political issues of the day, but
certainly a knowledge of that fact
could not have detered one so
egotistical as Rhodes. After
waiting long past due time for the
Union Labor man, the boys arran-
ged for the democratic speakers,
J. G. Kearby and Buck Wynne to
present -arid expound the issues
agitating the minds of all those
farmers, who unfortunately live
within tho narrow bounds of the
influences of those deadly politi-
cal upas trees W. E. ltarmer and
J. C. Rhodes. Hon. J. G. Kearby,
like a Robert E. Lee, marshalled
his political forces coolly and
calmly with the snow white record
of the Democratic party up to
1860 on the right wing with her
patient, untiring and Herculean
efforts under adverse circumstan-
ces, under “-.navel siring eircum*
stances”,as.in the Horace Greely
case, during the last twenty odd
years to relieve all classes,' and
more especially the down ridden
and oppressed people ot the South
from the ,misrule of the radical
party on the left wing, and the
wise, conservative aud manly
course at the present, on the one
all important tariff question ar-
rayed in the center, and with W.
B. Wynne like a Stonewall Jack
son pouring in his grape and can-
ister shot upon the political pri
vate record of the leaders of the
Union Labor party ami their
woman suffrage plank, and ad-
vanced upon the enemy with a
tljrce that was simply irresistible.
All opposition, so fnr as we heard,
was silenced except one old worn-
out piece of artilery made of a Cob
with the potli out, which shot
paper (greenback) wads only, to
the fun making merriment of the
audience, and also a low Bray was
heard occasionally in muttering
tones towards the rear. They
proposed to organize a Union La
bor club was a complete failure.
At the eloso an opportunity was
offered for voters to enroll upon
the Democratic club list, 7 new
members were added. You Union
Labor men, who heard Rhodes
last Saturday tailing how the
quite likely, providentially or
otherwise fail to put in an ap-
pearance.
