the Linux/Ubuntu operating
system,” Alves said. “Our team
captain, Matthew Zuniga, was
the Linux member on our team
and dedicated the entirety of the
six hour competition to finding
Linux/Ubuntu based security
threats and eliminating them,
thus earning points for our
team. This operating system is
perhaps the hardest for a high
school student to navigate due
to most of our computer contact
being PC and windows based
operating systems.”
Trevor further described the
second virtual machine that ran
a 64 bit architecture Windows
7 computer machine. The ma-
chine required precision man-
agement due to the possibility of
locking oneself out of the virtual
machine altogether.
Competitors had to focus on
small files as one file is often a
backdoor and made to look like
a system file. Both Linux and
Windows operating members
had almost 10,000 files at a time
that challenged them to get the
maximum amount of credit out
of the system image.
“The last virtual machine im-
age used was a Windows Server
2008,” Alves said. “While this
machine is very similar to the
Windows 7 computer machine,
it cannot use many of the simple
functions and protections as the
Windows 7 machine, thus mak-
ing it extremely hard to detect
security breaches and backdoor
files on the machines running
this operating system.”
The competition included a
small 10 question networking
quiz which was worth an ad-
ditional 33 points to the entire
team if answered 100 percent
correctly.
The quiz was based on net-
working modules shared by Cis-
co with the AFA Cyber Patriot
Program.
The modules require heavy
monitoring and studying to
memorize in order to effectively
answer the quiz correctly.
A team relies on a network-
ing specialist that uses a fraction
of the competition time to com-
plete the quiz and earn the extra
points for his or her team.
“The competition was fun
and challenging at the same
time while also providing the
foundation for a very profitable
career,” Zuniga said, “ft was like
a video game sometimes, and I
encourage more interested peo-
ple to join us.”
“When I first joined the cy-
ber patriot program, it not only
expanded my knowledge in
computers, servers and viruses,
but it also informed me about
the amount of jobs in the real
world that I could apply my
knowledge to and at the same
time earn a living,” Bouteiller
said.

The Aransas Pass NJROTC
Cyber Patriots team scored 247
points of a possible 300, which
was high enough to reach the
platinum level in the All-Ser-
vice Air Force Association
(AFA) National Youth Cyber
Education competition held at
Texas A&M University on Dec.
4. Platinum teams qualify for a
final round of national compe-
tition in the spring in an all-ex-

networking quiz worth a small
amount of team credit towards
the end of the competition,” ex-

What is virtual machine?
A virtual machine is an operating system that is
run by a third party program such as VMware or

machine to your hard drive.

What is hacking?
Hacking is the remote access or breaking and
entering of a system by someone other than the

Aransas Autoplex held a Christmas contest Dec. 8-22, reaching
over 14,000 of their fans on Facebook. The winners were Jessica
Ortiz Flores in first place, Viviana Hernandez in second place and
Kelly Miller Criddle in third place.
The Aransas Pass business also invited Santa Claus and offered
free pictures with the jolly fellow earlier in December. Families
enjoyed refreshments and a cheerful environment while getting
to take pictures with Santa and let him know what was on their
wish lists.
