BY CHARLES CHUPP
"Sorry to hear about your
frustration.” I lied. “But it looks
like you’ve done about all a man can
do to make the world a better place
for all humanity.”
“You know how many surplus
bowling balls they is in the world?”
Buford asked.
“Several?” I guessed. I figured
the filter was affecting Buford and I
began to edge toward the safety of
my pickup.
“Eight,” he said, “and they figure
prominently in my plan to give them
elected hot checkers what they
deserve and make them more easily
identifiable!”
“You’ve lost me,” I admitted
shamelessly. “They ain’t many uses
for second hand bowling balls. What
are you going to do, chain one
around their ankles?”
“Nope,” Buford smiled broadly,
around their necks-on a three foot
chain! They’ll hafa cradle it in their
arms like a baby, and they can’t
take it off until they’re out of
office! They’ll be easy to spot, and
the public’s memory will be better.
Of course, the glut of wore out
bowling balls will ease up some
too!”
“You submitted your proposal to
H. Ross Perot?” I asked.
“You dang betche I did," Buford
threw his Marlboro down and
stomped it out. “I'm gonna hafta
give up smoking,” he said. “lam
getting to where I don’t enjoy them
like I used to. They taste kind of
whangy sometimes.”
“Did you get any kind of response
from H. Ross?” I asked.
“Nope,” Buford said.— “-As »
..utter of fact, he dropped out the
day after I mailed it.”
“That’s the best explanation I’ve
heard,” I admitted,
others to discover artifacts and
When the vicissitudes of life get
too heavy for me to tote, I slink off
down to the wilds north of Gran bury
and unload on the unsuspecting head
of Buford Murray. Old Buford is a
boon pardner of mine who has an
awesome grasp on every subject
from anthropometry to Zymurgy.
Actually, his opinion span reaches
plumb back to aardvarkology, and
he’s told me some astounding tales
about them little rascals.
I went out to see Buford, intent on
telling him of my troubles on the old
Chisholm Trail, but upon my arrival
he lit the Alter end of a cigarette
from his crush-proof box, and with
tears in his eyes, he informed me
that he was in no mood to suffer my
lamentations.
“Them sorry scamps has gulled us
and smooth got away with it,"
Buford said, “and I ain’t got the
patience to solve any of your
piddling problems! ”
“What scamps is that?” I asked. I
was visibly shaken by Buford’s
outburst of emotion.
“Them suckers we’ve got on the
payroll up there in Washington, D. of
C!” Buford, said as he took another
draw of filter. “Them paper
hangers that practiced their
penmanship on them warm checks
hereawhile back! They fessed up,
apologised and lied like a trooper so
far in advance of election time that
most everybody’s done and forgot
about it!”

“You apparently ain’t forgotten,”
I said. “Or forgiven.”
“You got that right!” Buford
roared, “and I had a plan all worked
out thaUvould’ve cleaned up politics
if that Dallas pygmy hadn’t dropped
out of the race! I wrote him a long
letter about it, but now he’s quit and
made me even madder.”
