LABOR DAY IS “HELP
YOURSELF, BUY
AMERICAN DAY”
Senator Bob Glasgow has
announced that Labor Day,
September 7, has been proclaimed
“Help Yourself, Buy American
Day" in Texas. Governor Ann
Richards, at the request of Senator
Glasgow, issued the proclamation
for the State of Texas.
Part of the text of the
proclamation reminds Texans that
"When the consumers of this nation
purchase American-made products
the nation’s economy is stimulated,
creating increasing employment
opportunities and economic
growth.’’
Upon the issuance of the
proclamation, Senator Glasgow
made the following statement: "1
am pleased that the Governor of our
State has agreed with me that this is
a cause worthy of such a
proclamation. Labor Day is a
uniquely American celebration. It is
appropriate that we also honor our
American workers on this day by

honoring their product. Utving other countries, but
preference to American-made
products does not involve sacrificing
quality of paying higher prices than
products are worth. In many
fields, American-made products are
not just competitive with those of
CHRISTIE RICHARDSON is the
17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene Richardson. She is the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.G.
Barker of Concord and Mr. and Mrs.
J.D. Richardson of De Leon.
Christie will be a junior at De Leon
High School In the fall. She will be
involved in sports and is a twirler in
the Mighty Maroon Band. Her
hobbies include singing, twirling,
sports and just hanging out with her
friends. She is an active member of
the First Baptist Church in De Leon
and an employee at De Leon Nursing
Home. Her escort will be Richard
Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rodger
Owen.
Christie will be representing the
community of Robinson Springs in
the Peach and Melon Festival
activities.

added, “I hope Texans will heed the
message of Senator Glasgow and
Governor Richards’ proclamation
designating September 7, Help
Yourself, Buy American Day.’ After
all, what better day than Labor Day

whenever possible, for quality
products made by American
workers?”
Efforts are underway to have
similar proclamations in place in
each of the SO states, so that all
Americans can show their pride in
domestically-produced goods in
celebration of Labor Day._

Program
Performing during the Queen’s
Coronation Wednesday night will be
January Barker of Meridian.
She is the 13-year-old daughter of
Ronnie and Debbie Barker. She is
the granddaughter of Mildred
Barker and great-granddaughter of
Theo Barker, both of De Leon.
January has performed at
community events such as the
Freedom Fest in Clifton, the
Septemberfest in Cranfills Gap, and
the Fundango and Christmas
Parade in Meridian.
She has also appeared on stage at
the Cross Timbers Opry in
Stephenville, the Mesquite Opry, the
Burleson Jamboree, and the Johnny
High Country Music Revue in
Haltom City.
