BY CHARLES CHUPP
Synopsis: Last week Mr. Donnie
Nowlin tyranizzed Messrs. Mike and
Slick Carlin with all manner of
devilment. As a matter of fact, we
left them upon a hot roof with no way
down.
Luckily, Mr. Lannes Callison
came upon the scene and stood the
ladder back up to ensure a safe
descent for the marooned Carlins.
Their gratitude knew no bounds, and
neither did Slick’s rancor.
“I’m gonna get that Nowlin,” he
said, “and I’m gonna get him good! ”
“Perhaps I may be of assistance,”
said Mr. Callison.
Now Lannes is world renowned for
helping folks in distress and he aided
and abetted Mr. Slick Carlin
unselfishly in his planned revenge.
He graciously provided part of the
equipment, and It was not the
squash.
You see, at a later date, Donnie
returned to his vehicle, which had
been resting unlocked in a parking
lot here in our city. He got into the
cab and was pleased to see that
someone had left a large paper sack
in the front seat. Two huge squash
rested atop that tightly closed sack,
and they were gem dandies. Donnie
was not surprised at such a gift; it Is
not out of the ordinary to receive
tribute from the little people.
Smiling, he hefted the squash for an
estimate of poundage.
“How nice,” he thought as he
activated his ignition and began to
back up. "Wonder what’s In the
sack?” Donnie was sipping a Coke,
but he was still able to hold the
steering wheel as he worked that
sack open. It was a grave error.
At this point, I must pause from
the main stem of this story so as to
inform my readers that the Carlin
boys and Mr. Lannes Callison are
incurable herpatologists. It Is a
quaint affliction, as far as I’m
concerned. But different folk have
different quirks, and that’s the way
the world goes. Now, Donnie Nowlin
ain’t into that there herpatology-
none. As a matter of fact, pictures of
snakes makes him juberious. What
emerged from that paper sack was
not a picture howsome-ever - inside
that sack was the genuine article,
and that five foot bullsnake was
mighty perturbed. He did not
recognize Donnie as an ally nor his
liberator.
Actually, he barely saw Donnie.
You see, Donnie deserted the ship,
so to speak, and he didn’t take the
time to disengage the transmission
or kill the motor. Nossir, he had the
emigrating urge and he departed
that cab with dazzling alacrity.
Details get fuzzy about this point,
but it is alleged that Mr. Lannes
Callison happened to be in the area
and he did his dead level best to
restore order. You will recall, of
course, that Mr. Callison is world
renowned for helping folks in
distress. The vehicle was stopped
short of a collision and the hull snake
was brought under control. Donnie
was passing through Gorman at
eighty-seven miles an hour and still
gaining momentum.
“Tsk, tsk,” said Slick Carlin when
he was apprised of the incident. “I
shore hate to hear it.” He appeared
to exude sincerity, but you know
how brick layers are.
Donnie’s heart rate activated the
Richter Scale as far away as
Limestone, Maine, but he survived
the ordeal and is back plying his
trade. He is also seeking an attorney
who specializes in mental anguish -
suits.
Lannes Callison befriended the
bullsnake and did his best to locate a
good hime for him. He offered it to
Wayne Wilkinson, but Wayne turned
the deal down. Wayne said he
already had all the snakes he
needed, but he did not say exactly
how many that was.
Sadly, Lannes put the orphan
snake in the bed of his pickup and he
meant to offer it to a dear friend up
Gorman way. Alas, the snake gave
up hope ami abandoned Lannes'
truck summers betwixt here and
Gorman. Or else he’s hid out in the
bed of that pickup.
All the participants in this saga
are proapering, are able to take
nourishment and are edgily waiting
to see what happens next. They are
living happily ever after-at least for
the time being. If there’s a moral to
be found, it has to be "Time Wounds
All Heels.”
